Ohare, like Atlanta, doesn't really feel like a "place". You're always in a hallway. Ironically, the spot that
does have a sense of place is just a hallway, the Terminal one tunnel with the moving walkway and lights.
If you have two hours to kill, it sucks to spend it an terminal that was designed before 2000. They were designed to accommodate the number of passengers they handle, they don't have enough bathrooms and restaurants per traveler and they feel cramped--like you are either in a waiting room or you're in a hallway, nothing else.
My modern standard for design is the Madrid airport--though I know there are many other stand outs that I haven't been to.

In the U.S., Detroit's newest terminal is pretty good. The new LaGuardia terminal is not bad. Midway's new dining hall in Terminal-A was a major upgrade. And the addition of the bars in the center of the concourses in Terminal B really do a lot to liven the place up and break up the monotony.
