PAC approved the Colpitts York Street former railway land development as well as the mosque project this evening. The mosque development on Alison Blvd will be built in stages beginning with the main prayer hall. Subsequent phases will include classroom space and a gymnasium. Phase 1 including the dome and tower will start construction in June. The project is entirely funded by the congregation and fundraising. No taxpayers $$$ involved.

CBC Article on the Mosque approval

Looks like the existing Mosque is somewhat in the area (It's in Lincoln) and there were concerns about traffic and the lack of sidewalks.

I'm not sure how moving to Allison Blvd will help with those concerns that much; but a bigger lot with (assumingly) more parking would probably help with congestion in general. And the roadway itself is wide with large shoulders which does make it somewhat more walkable I guess.

The way things are growing out there, I wouldn't be surprised if the city will eventually look at either a walking trail parallel to Allison, or sidewalks. Probably not for another decade or so of growth.

Not a bad looking building IMHO (except perhaps being a bit suburban in character, but, if this building is intended to be partly a community centre for the Muslim community too, then this is understandable).

Growth there has been happening at a snail's pace and I wouldn't expect this mosque to change that.

The Greenwood Drive proposal was approved. Of note is that 50% or the units will be designated "affordable housing". Needs to go to council for final approval for rezoning. Construction expected to begin in May or June 2022

One thing that occurred to me, is that the Alison Blvd location is basically overlooking the Vanier highway, near Leons. So while the mosque is on the outskirts of the city, it is also basically on one of the main entry points into the city. For people coming in from the east and south (and from the airport) it will be noticeable. So in that respect, the renders and designs seem a bit simple (IMO); I'd almost want a slightly grander building; but it is a very minor quibble.

I was going to park in that parking lot next to FYEye Doctors, and I was surprised to see the entrances closed off and the area fenced off with an excavator and portapotty set up on the side nearest the parking garage. It looks like it would cover the footprint of the courthouse plans.

I was just by there and digging has begun.

It is hard to keep track. Wondering if one of the admins could start breaking these out into separate threads. There are so many sub-threads fro Moncton and it would be nice to see more of them for Freddy!

Prefix threads are more or less up to us to make when we think there's enough chatter for it. Now that Freddy's a CMA, I've been spinning off a few side threads and project threads where it seems to make sense. We might eventually have a Northside and Southside thread for Freddy if we want (and I've debated a Freddy Transportation thread for highway work).

In any case, I don't think we'll need a project thread for the Mosque, but we do have ones for the Wagoneers apartments, the Courthouse, and we should probably make one for the Trainyards development now that it is approved.

When we have a clearer picture of the NBEx redevelopment plans (projects approved) we'll probably make a thread for that too.

The Playhouse plans when they are approved will probably be their own thread too, likely becoming similar to Moncton's Avenir thread in the end.

No surprise. Funds are confirmed for the Brookside/Ring Road roundabout per the Capital Budget. Construction to take place summer 2022

About damn time it was done. This roundabout has been way more political than it should've been. But I guess that's somewhat to be expected for an intersection that mixes Provincial and Municipal needs.

I've debated starting the downtown thread but haven't quite felt we'd have enough traffic for it yet. Probably the next big project (that doesn't deserve its own project thread) will be a good time to start one. Must be another temporary home because there's an item going to PAC in January for 521 Dundonald to allow an apartment building in the MX-3 zone, which I believe is that property.

Also, there's a rezoning application for 49 Forest Hill Road to change it to MR-4 and allow two main buildings on a lot. That's basically across from the micro unit building currently under construction.

Interesting. I wonder where they will put it? I suspect north of the city somewhere, probably north west to avoid the Route8 corridor.

They have put aside $2.5M for plan, design and land acquisition. I highly suspect they already know the location. I expect you are correct that it will be located somewhere north of the Wolostook River, however don't rule out a location like Burton who will be losing their courthouse or Minto where a facility like this could help soften the resistance to municipal reform
