I think you're right, other than the colour seeming to get darker at the top. I completely missed the up-swoop on the lighter day time render.

One think I think looks better in the night render is that is seems to slightly emphasize the vertical lines more than horizontal, the light one is more an even flat grid. If it's gonna be a tall "feature" building, emphasizing that height seems like the way to go.

The new design has a flat roof while the older one had that curve on top, otherwise they are the same yes

Those images were from May 2020. The newer design has a flat roof.

Toronto has the CN tower, Mississauga has got the suicide hooker cola bottle towers, and Hamilton will have a dart. True Hamilton spirit right there

Regardless of the quality of the materials and the build, it just seems like an ordinary tower. A well-built tower and probably the nicest tower in the city but still not a signature or landmark tower. No one is going to visit Hamilton to see this tower. I like classic and clean but something needs to spice this up. Also, I’d like one in the core and a shorter one on the edge of the escarpment. “The beacons are lit. Gondor calls for aid”

Thought the Torre Sevilla could help us imagine the possibilities. Imagine having a rust colour like that! It's designed by Pelli Clarke & Partners.

Great idea and connection.

I visited Seville a couple of years ago, and it's got quite an eclectic mix of architecture. Few tall buildings though, in fact that's the only one above 65m in height aside from an observation tower, so it stands out like a broken finger but looks nice on its own.

Whoa that last photo above is exactly what our waterfront could look like when it's all complete, I would love this! That colour for the tower would also match perfectly with the rust looking steel pier walls they just built down there!

The proposed development consists of two connected tower forms above a two-storey podium. A larger circular tower form is proposed to a height of 45 storeys (147.0 metres) with a smaller connected tower form proposed up to 31 storeys. Parking is proposed to be located underground with amenity provided indoors, at grade and within an outdoor terrace at the 31 storey. The proposed Zoning By-law Amendment includes local commercial and institutional uses at grade with residential units occupying the remainder of the building. The amending Bylaw includes a maximum gross floor area of 850 square metres for floors four to 30, a maximum gross floor area of 650 square metres for floors 31 and up, and a maximum gross constructed area (including above grade mechanical areas) of 38,200 square metres. A total of 1,645 dwelling units are permitted for the entire Pier 8 lands, of which a minimum 396 would be required to be family sized units (two or more bedrooms). The final design is intended to be determined through a special design process that includes developing three alternative tower designs that address innovation in the areas of sustainability, quality of life and design excellence.

From the Spec today. I'm not sure people on Guise St. should be complaining about shadows... there won't be any south of the project! Maybe they're worried about the folks on the rest of Pier 8 in the morning and evening, and the boats forced to sail through dark patches of water north of the tower during the livelong day.

Architect hopes 45-storey tower will be ‘flagship’ for Hamilton
Proposed highrise pitched as part of residential revamp of west harbour lands

Hamilton will see three versions of a 45-storey tower pitched as the anchor of a transformed west harbour.

They’re part of a special design process meant to result in a civic landmark at Pier 8 that’s visible from miles around.

“It’s not just a regular condominium building with balconies off the edges of them,” architect Bruce Kuwabara told The Spectator.

“It’s not. It’s really about defining a marker.”

The proposed cylindrical 45-storey lakeside skyscraper connected to a 31-storey companion over a two-storey companion would be the signature standout of a 1,645-unit residential revamp of Pier 8.

In 2018, council agreed to partner with Waterfront Shores to redevelop the city-owned pier into condo apartments and townhouses with an eight-storey height limit.

But an appeal to the provincial land-dispute tribunal was settled with an agreement to consider a tall building to allow for more family units.

The current plan calls for a minimum of 396 two- and three-bedroom units as part of the overall redevelopment. Habitat for Humanity will also oversee 65 affordable units.

Last month, a representative of the Waterfront Shores consortium told The Spectator sales were expected to begin in the fall with construction getting underway in 2023.

For Kuwabara, a founding partner of KPMB Architects, the project is significant on a personal level. He grew up in the North End.

“It’s quite a story. You get an opportunity to build a tall building in the neighbourhood you grew up in. I mean, that’s kind of it in a nutshell,” he said in an interview.

Three detailed iterations of his concept will be presented to the city’s design review panel March 10 and April 27 to refine the final product.

A virtual public information centre is also planned for March 8.

In a report before councillors Tuesday, staff wrote the end goal of the process is a blueprint for a “metropolitan/regional level landmark” on the harbour.

The three options are to show “innovation in the areas of quality of life, sustainability and design excellence.”

...

But there is also opposition in the North End, including a petition from residents of Guise Street East, which overlooks the harbour, that raises concerns over potential shadows and increased traffic in the area.

For people without the Spectator subscription see the article below

CBC article

It's fascinating that two local neighbourhood associations support the project. I'm still on the fence as it will look strange unless there's other mid sized (10-12 stories) developments that follow the water's edge until say the HMCS Haida. But I also understand if this area stays like the "Beaches" in Toronto where they've never butchered the waterfront.

Obviously Hamilton can't turn the waterfront into Toronto because we're limited by the industrial space anyways. However I could see future development and densification + extension of Bayfront Park, if they can ever reach a deal with CN for the railyard around the bay. That would be pretty cool.

Hamilton's waterfront as planned is going to be pretty excellend for a mid-sized city, a large park right on the water with Bayfront Park, more urban waterfront areas with Pier 8, boardwalks on Piers 6 & 7, etc.

Plus Confederation Beach Park is excellent, even if it could use a bit of sprucing up.

Based on Bruce's three-tower proposals, there's the regular cylinder-shaped building that we've all seen so far. The second and third tower is named wave and lily.

If looking directly down at the tower from above, the wave design is cylinder, except it has wavey edges to absorb the wind. The third option is kind of like a lily pad, almost square but warped to give an inorganic shape.

All have a proposed three-storey podium, and on one side, there's a row of townhouses across from a pedestrian mew.

You mean there are three different proposals for the tower, right? Not three towers?

The meeting link notes presentation and video will be available Mar 11, so I guess we'll see this all on Friday (unless someone has advance copies or their own pics)
