There might be some space for the return of Baskin Robbins after the nearly total collapse of the frozen yogurt trend. It sort of seems like Menchies disappeared overnight.

There's a lot of competition but most of it is higher end and won't compete with Baskin Robbins and they still probably have some brand recognition leftover from their operations outside of Canada.

I wouldn't have picked BR to emerg from the Frogurt Wars.

Lots of high end ice cream places out there, but not everybody wants to pay $8+ for a scoop. I'm sure there's a good mid-range place for BR to occupy.

DQ is all over, but that's soft serve of course.

That's me - I'd rather buy 2 large tubs of Chapman's than a single scoop.
The exception is if I'm on vacation somewhere.

they still exist out in the burbs. But they are expensive. We got a pretty simple small sized bowl and didn't over fill it and the small amount for two of us cost just over $21. Ridiculous.

I don't know about Chapman's, but I'll take some BR rocky road any day of the week.

I think Uno Gelato is from the founder of Bella Gelateria

Single Scoop $7 Double Scoop $8.50 Pint $15

So I assume you get around half a pint from a single scoop?

Single scoop at Baskin Robbins seems like it's around $3.50 (2018 price)

There are two things at play here:

1. Some trendy restaurants (including ice cream shops) charge an arm and a leg for experience or presentation and whatnot. I don't put a lot of value in those things, but there are plenty of people who are searching first and foremost for a good food picture for Instagram or Snap Chat; the taste and quantity of the food is secondary for these people.
2. Some food (including ice cream) is actually a more delicious product than the alternative. Saying you prefer a couple tubs of Chapmans over fresh gelato is like saying you prefer a 15-pack of Bud Light over an 8-pack of Guinness, or a dozen doughnuts from Tim's over 6 from Duffin's. Not saying that some people don't actually prefer the less expensive option, but they are not equivalent products.

Expensive prices doesn't stop giant lineups at places like Earnest either. I usually split one with my wife. Easier on the wallet and the waistline.

Chapman's Premium is pretty good (esp. the black cherry flavour).

It's real ice cream, not "frozen dessert" like blue label Breyer's (Breyer's black label is their real ice cream), and comes on sale for $3.99-$4.99 for a 2 litre tub (reg. $6.99(?)). They're also a family-run Canadian company located in Ontario.

You can get a free $4 off coupon each year at their website:

And unless they are hand churning ice cream even the expensive guys just use wholesale bases.

Chapman's has a lot of air added into their ice cream. Compare the weight of a tub sometime with a premium product.

Ron.

Surprising as it used to be line-ups out the door in the summer.

That was before all the drama around the business and the ownership.

I think Chapman's Premium also has a lot of air in theirs as well, as there's a giant fluffy swirl when you open it up.
But I likethe taste.
... now to find a rum raisin ice cream...
When Sobey's took over Safeway, Lucerne discontinued their rum raisin flavour.
