Good in theory and for warmer weather but I don't see a benefit in having a frozen mass of leftovers frozen to the bottom of the bin all winter.

Your compost has to be wrapped in compostable bags. Calgary has a similar system. You don't just throw your leftover food into a bin. First bag it, then bin it. Most of my friends (myself included) have a compost container under their sink, or on their counter that biodegradable goods go into.

I won't be bagging yard waste and I am not going to buy special compostable bags for my kitchen waste. I may use paper bags which we will have in abundance once the plastic ban kicks in in February. I also already compost 90% of my (large) yard waste and about 10% of my kitchen waste.

How many people will do that?

When you say Calgary has a "similar system", what does that mean?

This is from the cities website which only says you "can" use compostable bags but it's not a requirement.

Here’s a look at what residents can expect coming in 2023:

A 240-litre green cart will be used to collect the material - this is two-thirds the size of the blue carts that residents have today
All food scraps, including meat, bones, dairy and greases, yard waste and soiled paper (paper towel, cardboard and tissues) can go into the green cart which will divert roughly 50 per cent of the waste that is currently going into the garbage in Regina
Residents can use compostable bags
Green carts will be collected weekly between April and October and biweekly between November and March; garbage will be collected biweekly year-round

Living in Toronto since 2008, I have had a plastic compost bin under my
sink with the biodegradable bags, which when full, I tie and put into the compost shute (collection bin for Regina). Easy to do and becomes the same process as putting recycling in the recycling bin and your garbage into the garbage. This will be good for Regina and is incredibly simple.

Yeah it's not that hard. I'm sure people used to just throw stuff out the window, too, but adapted to using garbage bags for pickup. Doing the same for compostable material is just as easy.

We have a compost container in our kitchen that we fill and then put into our backyard compost bin (one of those small, rotating kinds). We look forward to using this program.

We also put all of our yard waste into the large, paper bags you can get from Home Depot/Lowes. They are cheap, durable, and easy to use. Right now we just haul them to the yard waste drop-off, but in the future it will be nice to be able to just put them in the compost bin.

The City's info is pretty inconsistent on this. In the FAQ they say no compostable bags:
Quote:
Plastic bags, including all types of “certified compostable” and “biodegradable” are not accepted.
GLAD compost bags
It is interesting that unlike Saskatoon, Regina will accept meat, dairy, cooking oils and grease. They will even take hunting waste like deer hides and bones.
I wouldn't want to be around that truck in the middle of July.

If people don't use bags or hose out the bin once in a while then it's on them if the bin gets gross and attracts pests. Of course, said people will most likely just not use the bin and complain when their new, smaller garbage bin is overflowing.

Agreed. These past few weeks are really the first time I've noticed our bin was full before the next bi-weekly pickup. That will not be an issue when all of the organic waste is effectively diverted. This change is overdue! Other jurisdictions have had compost in place for well over a decade!

I noticed the two-week change when, the week after Halloween, our pumpkin-filled bin stayed on the street all day (along with the rest on the block). Having to wait an extra week sucked in that case!

Probably about the same time that ours was full too!

Nope. The proposal went to city council a while ago. A small triangle space on the north side.

Vic Square mini-golf

I was trying to figure out where this space would be. Judging by the shape, I'm thinking this will occupy the former TD Bank location opposite Safeway.

I know there is a lot of vacancies, but where are they going to fit an actual amusement park? Or are they referring to a Wonderland style arcade?

New winter festival “Frost Regina” coming in February

Reid added that they will wrap it all up with Regina’s winter skies, which will see a free hi-tech drone show at Mosaic Stadium, which will provide futuristic entertainment for all ages.

Good news

Mosaic Stadium

On last week's Rider game broadcast on TSN they had some really good overhead drone video of the stadium as they broke for commercials. It's nice to see they've abandoned what they did in the past showing farmers fields or hay bails, like the city is a farm or something.. Anyways here are a few pics if you didn't watch the game.
