There should be no bike along Lougheed to begin with and this Nazi can take Central Valley Greenway like everyone else.

We're going to have to agree to disagree. Yes there are some streets that are better for bike lanes than others - but this has been marked as a bike lane. I used to routinely see delivery type vehicles (and I'm counting a construction truck in that group) stopped on bike lanes. Drivers would scream blue murder if those vehicles did the same thing to car lanes but when they do it to bike lanes then the cyclists are being entitled?

If this were a sidewalk or a car lane it would need to be marked and alternate arrangements made.

Or cyclists riding on sidewalks downtown

I tended to avoid sidewalks but when it was a busy street... lets just say I don't have a death wish. I quickly gave up keeping count of the number of times drivers would almost sideswipe me. When you're a cyclist on a street that has any kind of (car) traffic then you become an invisible moving target.

We could compare notes on how often pedestrians walk all over multi use pathways as if it's their personal boardwalk and they don't have to make room for anyone else. Or one of my pet peeves - pedestrians who walk on (mostly new) marked bike lanes.

There's no group that are angels here

Yeah I don't mind it as long as they don't think it's a cycling lane and are going full tilt with pedestrians.

They'll probbaly erect a "bike lane closed" sign with a detour to Dawson.

I'd take my chances with that squished bike lane than go on Dawson

Also that stretch of Henning Drive out to Boundary is horrible. It's like a magnet for every idiot contractor speeding to and from Home Depot.

I bet that is exactly the case and there is a sign in place about closure, but the cyclist here feels entitled to have the bike lane open despite major construction. Just that he can fight climate change with his pedaling. It's so surreal in its feeling of entitlement that it is funny.

What is not funny is City of Burnaby reacting to a random tweet and reaching out to Onni that the bike lane shall not be closed, no matter that it rains around the clock this month. That's what kills the joke of the original tweet.

There is no sign except for the sidewalk being closed.

I can't believe this dumb cyclist thought they could cycle in an official bike lane when they should have realized people don't cycle in November. Such a Nazi.

Plus all the town centres in Burnaby (this is part of Brentwood town centre) are including bike infrastructure with their redevelopments.

Are you serious dude? This cyclist is complaining about something that literally gets people killed. If it inconveniences the contractor, that — for them I guess, but they have a legal and moral obligation to make sure their work is not endangering the public. Forcing cyclists to merge into fast car traffic without any warning, in the middle of a huge blind spot for those trucks, is absolutely a hazard and they need to correct it..

So they'll just close the bike lane, problem solved

Great reporting here. Thanks for the link.

From the article posted:

Quote:
As one of the developer’s public benefit contributions, there will also be direct improvements to Gilmore Station. Onni Group will construct new permanent canopies for the platform level of the station, replacing the temporary wooden panel canopies first installed when the station was built 20 years ago. The 8,200 sq ft roof that exists today was built in just four days.
I've always thought Gilmore Station looked cheap compared to all the others on the Millenium line. Glad to hear that plywood roof is going to be replaced.

I mean sure, but have signage and marked detours and flaggers just like if it were car lanes being closed. This notion that cyclists are being too demanding (or being, uh, Nazis) for wanting the same safety considerations we regularly give motorists is really absurd, and it costs lives.

That's old news to me. I'm more surprised it took this long to happen.

An image from the article. Does anyone know which buildings are planned to be residential vs office, etc? Will they be single use or will they combine residential with office in a tower?

Original master plan of Gilmore Place. This concept is outdated, and is set to be updated in 2022. (Onni Group)

The 2019 version of Phase 2 had a 37 storey office tower, and two residential towers. The office had 18,000+ sq ft floorplates, so logically it would be the square building closest to tower 3, with the two residential towers on Dawson. It looks like they're revising what they want to develop, but I think they have to build commercial space before they can build much more residential.

Yep, the only logical conclusion in this case. Just like the sidewalk, the bike lane should be closed for the entire duration of the construction for the safety of the cyclists. I am sure that lonely cyclist each hour won't even mind, as they get to do more pedaling to save the planet. It's a win-win.

Same as the closure of the west side Hamilton St. sidewalk at The Post, which has been off limits for the duration of the project.
