The City of Edmonton has selected Hyundai Rotem Company as the preferred supplier for the 40 LRVs for Valley Line West. Delivery is scheduled to begin in early 2025 and they will integrate with Valley Line SE to provide a seamless ride from Lewis Farms to Millwoods and vice versa.

That's great! Vancouver has done well with its Hyundai Rotem Canada Line rolling stock. We desperately need a new low-floor LRV supplier to break Bombardier/Alstom's monopoly in Canada.

Agreed, I wonder if the ETS LRVs will look similar to the new ones ordered for Warsaw's tram? I like the look of them more than the Flexity Freedoms, tbh.

It is likely due to the plant being located in Canada which may make things easier.

City names preferred proponent for Valley Line West LRVs
November 10, 2021

The City of Edmonton has selected Hyundai Rotem Company as its preferred proponent to supply 40 light-rail vehicles (LRVs) for the 14-kilometre Valley Line West LRT project.

Hyundai Rotem Company and the City will enter into final discussions, with the contract expected to be finalized by December 2, 2021. The LRVs will be delivered beginning in 2025.

“We want to thank the teams that participated in the Request for Proposal phase of procurement for LRVs for Valley Line West. We’re excited to have reached another significant project milestone,” said Brad Smid, Valley Line Director, City of Edmonton.

The City launched its procurement for LRVs in November 2020 and released its shortlist in March 2021. Eight teams provided technical submissions that met the City’s requirements with three teams being short-listed and invited to submit proposals. The teams were scored based on price and technical components, and the team with the highest overall score was chosen as the preferred proponent for LRVs. The process was overseen by a third-party fairness monitor.

The City decided to procure LRVs for Valley Line West separately from the overall design-build-partially finance contract after engaging with industry partners and reviewing the optimal risk allocation for the project. The 40 vehicles delivered by Hyundai Rotem Company will integrate with Valley Line Southeast to ensure a seamless ride between Mill Woods and Lewis Farms.

Marigold Infrastructure Partners, the contractor building Valley Line West, began construction on the project earlier this year. An economic assessment estimates that, overall, construction will generate $760 million in wages in Alberta and another $209 million throughout the rest of the country. It is expected to generate 8,800 jobs in the province and another 2,700 across Canada.

The $2.6 billion Valley Line West project has funding commitments from the Province of Alberta and the Government of Canada. It is the second phase of the Valley Line, a 27-kilometre, low-floor, urban-style LRT that will provide seamless connection between Mill Woods and Lewis Farms once complete. The first phase of the project, Valley Line Southeast, is currently under construction.

Releasing separate RFQs for civil work and rolling stock is becoming more and more common. It's a trend that may prove benificial.

As long as the power systems and the track geometry is standard that would be a great way to ensure we get the cars we should have.

SmartTrack is now live on Metrolinx's website...

The SmartTrack Stations program is a collaboration between the Province of Ontario, City of Toronto and Metrolinx. With funding from the City of Toronto and the federal government, the City will be able to make use of Metrolinx’s GO rail infrastructure in Toronto to remake the regional commuter service into an urban rapid transit network.

The Ontario government and the City of Toronto have signed a revised “Ontario-Toronto Agreement in Principle,” endorsing the SmartTrack Stations Program and advancing it one step closer to construction.

Toronto will see five new stations along existing GO rail corridors and bring more frequent rapid transit service for the people of Toronto:

St. Clair-Old Weston GO Station
Bloor-Lansdowne GO Station
King-Liberty GO Station
Finch-Kennedy GO Station
East Harbour Transit Hub

All five stations are anticipated to be open and operational in 2026.

First I've heard about Bloor-Lansdowne. That's smart. Is the Eglington stop on the Barrie line part of the Eglington LRT and therefore not listed as SmartTrack? Is there a difference between SmartTrack stations and stations that are simply new?

It’s very confusing but Smart Track stations are basically just regular GO stations that the City is paying to build. Metrolinx / the province is also paying for several new stations themselves in Toronto, which aren’t part of Smart Track. It doesn’t really make much sense.

New stations at Eglinton will be built on the Kitchener and Barrie lines by Metrolinx not as a part of Smart Track, as well as a new one at Spadina and Front and a few other stations I can’t remember.

Unless there is fare integration and free transfer with the TTC...

GO accepts Presto as TTC does. They introduced a discounted double fare a few years ago IIRC.

the discounted double fare expired under the PCs as they stopped funding it.

GO does have reduced short distance fares (dropping base fares from $5.65 to $3.50), which does help Toronto riders, but full fare integration is needed. I suspect it will come in a few years as the new Toronto stations get closer to completion.

I think full fare integration makes sense once you have services that solely or primarily serve Toronto, but as long as most routes are focused on the suburbs, offering incentives to attract short distance riders who would crowd out the longer distance riders the service was designed for wouldn't be practical.

I guess short distance rides will become more feasible once the SmartTrack stations are online? I haven't really sat down and considered GO travel within Toronto but it's no better than TTC and doesn't offer anything that isn't already offered either by subway or by streetcar.

But it would make up for all the suburbanites crowding out the shorter distance riders the subways were designed for.

I had the same question as biguc, thanks for ansowering. That is very confusing...I'm glad more transit in general is being invested into the city, although I still don't know how to feel about Smarttrack, considering it's been modified so much in the last few years. I'll just consider them new GO stations then.
