Sorry for the link I’ll need to figure out how to include images in the future. We do have lots of great development going up from the apartment next to the sundial, to the post district to others so can’t complain too much. Plus we need the residential units and the 10 stories is great!

When I look at development like this (the link) it makes me steaming mad that the architects around here (see 4th & Broadway) are either lazy and uninspired, or have no respect for us, the public, by submitting these wholly insipid and cookie cutter designs.

They were actually built around the same time.

The COB was completed in 1972. WTC in 1973. Not surprising that they are similar.

A few taller buildings in the middle of downtown will help balance out the look of a large lone building eventually.

Brutalist architecture is not everyone's cup of tea, as it generally emphasizes utility, not art.

People used to hate the International Style, but we all love the Ken Garff Building nowadays. Point being, COB will eventually blend in and add some variety to a newer more glamorous skyline.

Walking by the Hyatt Regency today I noticed a small press conference where people were gathered to hear a speaker and cameras were rolling. They had a large colorful metal beam staged nearby. I suspect this was some kind of topping out ceremony for the hotel. The CCH is looking good!

CINQ next to old Greek town station will look similar to the building I shared in the link. I like the CINQ design. We should be holding all our new developments to these standards instead of pushing through cookie cutter designs. I’d bet cost has something to do with it though. Cheaper, quicker and easier to design a box. With such a high demand for residential units uninspired cookie cutter designs will continue to get the green light.

I don't really like the design of the 4th and Broadway either. It already looks like an old building from the seventies. Is this project likely to happen or is very conceptual?

The conveyance marks a final step, the RDA said in a statement Friday evening, in moving ahead with nearly $100 million of residential and commercial development to revitalize that downtown neighborhood, including an infusion of affordable housing tucked inside in a 31-story luxury tower to be called 150 Main Street Apartments.

Actually, they weren't built at the same time at all. World Trade Center, or previously known as Eagle Gate Tower, was built around 1987, and has a lot more glass. I think what you guys are referring to is how it mimics the COB in form, and the vertical elements facing the COB.

Seems pretty loony to rather have a rotting theater that holds no intrinsic value (other than in the minds of historians) over a highrise that will assist in providing much needing housing for the city (not to mention much-needed green space). My guess is you've never set foot in that theater at any time in your life. Why would something that you've never been to (and probably wouldn't think about if it wasn't getting demolished) make you want to hold onto it? Over the years Salt Lake has seemed to have a real problem in the minds of locals that change is bad and we should always remain this little cute town. Salt Lake is growing and changing whether people like it or not. Some of that changing inevitably means getting rid of the past. To me it's much more important that unused space be turned into housing that will bring life and vibrancy to the city. We can document the past through video and pictures, and move forward with something that can hold real value to those that desire to live downtown.
