The Insurance Corporation of B.C. has launched a lawsuit against the City of Vancouver and BC Hydro to recover damages caused by an explosion near the Granville Street Bridge earlier this year.
The explosion, which occurred in an underground utility vault back on Jan. 5, sent large pieces of concrete crashing into numerous vehicles, according to a notice of civil claim filed last month.
The public insurer says a manhole cover was mistakenly paved over, which led to a “buildup of gases in an underground utility vault.”
The BC Hydro-owned vault “held electrical wires which may have been faulty, or the conductors were not maintained within the underground utility vault.”
A “resulting electrical arc” led to an explosion in the confined space, the notice of civil claim states.
...How do you miss a manhole when driving a paving machine over it??
From a 2019 mid-construction photo I assume they never raised it up to the new grade of the sidewalk that got covered with pavers and somewhere during construction it got covered with dirt.
haha 1 public entity wanting money from 2 other public entities. funny. not like it changes anything.
Well there might be a question to who's to blame. The city paved over the manhole creating the gases but there might have been a malfunction in the BC Hydro box to cause the arcing. I doubt their insurance let's them just assume the blame for the accident.
Now that I know how to upload pictures, not sure if that is a curse or privilege (sorry) but thought I would upload a few of Vancouver House when many of us had positive anticipation of the finished product. I know the under area of the bridge still needs completing, if it will ever. But I thought I captured a couple nice angles at the time. (early 2020)
