My guess is the crew is at the end of their shift and are required to take a break.

Yup. With only one flight a day and being a RON, it’s the only way to do it without having to pay for a 2nd hotel night for the crew which would be mighty expensive with a 50 seater.

The inaugural arrival on Sunday and departure on Monday, while not fully accurate, on the seat map looks about 2/3 full.

Today’s departure count: 43, including the inaugural F8 transborder flight to FLL, and first transborder departure period since June 2020, which departed on time. Today was also the return of AC to YTZ and later tonight marks the return of network transborder air service as UA touches down at YOW from IAD for the first time since late March 2020.

Have they not opened up Ottawa’s pre-clearance facility?

Touchdown! International flights return to Ottawa International Airport
Flair Airlines Flight 335 from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., with only about 20 passengers on board, landed at the Ottawa International Airport on Sunday afternoon.

After an absence of almost 600 days, and with only an 18-minute delay, an international flight finally touched down again in Ottawa.

Flair Airlines Flight 335 from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., with only about 20 passengers on board, landed at the Ottawa International Airport on Sunday afternoon, about eight hours after the same Boeing 737 left Ottawa for Florida.

The plane’s departure and later arrival were YOW’s first international flights since the federal government on March 18, 2020 — 592 days earlier — limited international flights to four Canadian airports, in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.

Only one other international flight, an evening United flight to Washington, D.C., was scheduled in Ottawa on Sunday.

For at least one arriving passenger, the reopening provided an opportunity to resume a part of her life that the pandemic had interrupted.

“I’m here to see a friend,” said Jupiter, Fla., resident Sherry Muss. “It’s a long story; it’s a reunion. I haven’t seen him since January 2020.

“It’s a romance, hopefully,” she added, “so I’m a little nervous. But it’s good to be back, because I’ve been visiting Canada for the last eight years.”

Andrew and Donna Ritchie, meanwhile, decked out in Miami Dolphins attire, were greeted at the airport by their daughter and granddaughter, who held up a long “Happy Birthday” banner to welcome Donna home.

The Ritchies were returning to Ottawa from a 23-day stay in Florida, where they have a home. According to Andrew, who works with the Ottawa Paramedic Service, it was their first visit to the U.S. since February 2020.

“I was there for the Super Bowl, just before it all happened,” he recalled. “They said there were five cases in Seattle, and we didn’t think anything of it. We got a flight back two days later, and that was the last time I had a sniff of the U.S.”

And although there was extra COVID-related paperwork and testing that had to be done, he said the process to get home wasn’t especially onerous. “It was a lot easier than getting there. I was nervous because I have a job and can’t afford to spend two weeks in quarantine, but we did a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test on Thursday and everything was fine.”

He and his wife also used the ArriveCAN app before leaving the U.S., which he said helped with the smooth arrival.

“But I’m looking forward to the actual borders to open so we can drive across.”

All of the passengers on Sunday’s flight from Fort Lauderdale boarded in the U.S. and so were not subject to the new vaccination travel requirements put in place by the Canadian government on Saturday.

Three passengers who weren’t fully vaccinated were required Sunday to take rapid COVID-19 tests.

Ron Axam, meanwhile, was also on Sunday’s flight, with his daughter Paris and son Devon. The three were returning from a four-day visit with Axam’s daughter, Alex, who lives in Florida.

“We hadn’t seen her in a long time,” said Axam, “and having a direct flight again is fantastic.”

Axam noted that their journey south last week was far more convoluted than Sunday’s return flight home: from Ottawa to Toronto to Syracuse, N.Y., to Fort Lauderdale.

“We were challenged to get on all our connecting flights.”

Still, he said, the return trip required getting COVID tests in Florida, plus the ArriveCAN check-in app.

“There’s a lot more administration than there used to be,” he said. “A lot more paperwork. But it’s a necessary evil these days. And not knowing the process was part of the anxiety, but now that we’ve gone through it once, even though it’s a bit more complex, it helps assuage the worry.”

I had it in mind that it wouldn’t be open due to minimum activity but I guess leaving from a TB departure gate means it was.

Nice story, and 20 pax northbound on the first ever flight is not bad.

Preclearance has reopened. The first precleared flight was actually the earlier with the Sens' first road trip to the USA.

Earlier today UA departed YOW for the first time since March 2020

Today's departure count of 48 ties the highest number since the start of the pandemic.

That's interesting because I saw the Leafs weren't able to clear in Toronto for some reason and had to clear in the USA when they traveled to the States for the first time.

Might be done differently in Ottawa than Toronto, but the Sens and visiting American teams have always departed from gate 11 or 12 and preclear customs whenever they're heading on an American road trip. Teams, including American, depart from the FBO though when it's a domestic road trip. Perhaps the YYZ policy is for sports teams to always depart from an FBO and clear upon arrival? That would be true in Montreal as most, if not all sports charters are out of YHU.

Airlines reopen airport lounges with new perks, more walk-ins

Allison Lampert, Reuters
Montreal | November 2, 2021
Published 3 hours ago

Airlines are reopening airport lounges with higher-end service to lure back premium travellers after the pandemic, while increasingly opening the VIP experience to tourists – for a fee.

Premium travel plummeted during the COVID-19 crisis, depriving airlines of higher-margin fares. But with traffic rebounding in certain regions and U.S.-bound travel set to reopen on Nov. 8, lounges are a crucial weapon in airlines’ post-crisis strategies for retaining their more profitable clients.

United Airlines opened its first Polaris lounge at Washington Dulles on Oct. 21 and announced plans last Thursday to reopen existing lounges in New York, Chicago and Houston by end-year, with the rest set to follow in early 2022.

Air France has inaugurated a 3,000-square-meter temple to French design in one of its main terminals at Paris Charles de Gaulle. Dubai’s Emirates and Air Canada both plan upgrades to lounge dining and service.

“A lot of the narrative around 2022 is really going to be around that food program, how we serve our customers and elevating that aspect of the experience,” said Mats Winter, director of product for Canada’s largest carrier.

Air Canada wants a “competitive product” for its business clientele but also for leisure travellers who are making up a growing part of premium-fare purchases, he said.

“The mix has changed, but our commitment to making sure we have a great premium product hasn’t. We are obviously keeping a very close eye on the traffic we are seeing in our lounges,” Winter added.

Designed as an oasis for premium travellers, lounges could attract more passengers looking to avoid crowds during COVID-19, said Michael Di Corpo, managing director of Montreal-based firm IEG, which sells software for managing airport lounges.

Passengers globally are contending with longer lines due to requirements like proof of vaccination, while many face longer layovers since ailing airlines now offer fewer direct flights.

“We’re seeing more of the ‘paying their way’ as a way of generating revenues, assuming they’re not at capacity,” Di Corpo said, referring to the purchase of daily lounge access.

Airlines contacted by Reuters don’t break out revenues from lounge services.

While some airlines have previously sold lounge access to passengers from the back of the plane, pressure to find new revenues in the wake of the industry’s worst crisis has grown.

Qatar Airways for one, recently launched a less expensive Business Lite fare, where lounge access costs extra.

American Airlines, which reopened the first of its Flagship Lounges in September to premium classes on long-haul flights, made paid access available for the first time.

The airline is especially targeting people travelling for occasions like weddings and reunions, a spokeswoman said.

But there are limits to the democratization of lounges, which can represent investments of millions of dollars.

The last thing executives say they can afford is to crowd out corporate clientele or well-off individuals who drive profits on routes like the Atlantic, with the United States lifting restrictions Nov. 8 for vaccinated foreigners.

At American Airlines, the $150 cost of a day pass to Flagship doesn’t give economy passengers access to its most elite service, a private restaurant within the lounge. It does include food with a different menu and space.

United said Polaris lounges would remain premium class only.

Air Canada decided last November to open three of its Maple Leaf lounges to paying walk-in economy passengers and travellers from other airlines on a trial basis to use spare capacity during COVID-19. It has since ended the practice in Vancouver.

“We don’t want this to eventually drive capacity concerns, for example, for our premium customers,” Winter said.

I guess they can't do that here in the winter, unless they use de-icing fluid
