Start seeing spashes of yellow in August. Then all the trees turn yellow at the same time in September and then fall off in 3 weeks. Then at last some bushes turn red and it's only middle of October. Then everything is brown until the snow covers it if it hasn't already knocked all the leaves off. It's sunny though most of the time. Hasn't rained since August.

Accurate except for this year where we've had rain throughout the fall and almost made it through Oct without snow (tomorrow's our first). Otherwise you are correct. Only the bushes have leaves left (and tower poplars) and everything's brown.

I went end of Oct and it was beautiful. Actually went to the cemetery on the mountain for Halloween and got lost. Plenty of people in costume wandering around.

You may be interested to know that Mont Royal (that untouched mountain) wad designed by Olmsted. He's the same landscape architect who designed Central Park in New York.

It has little to do with Europe or students and everything to do with how North American cities were built back then. People in the US northeast, the Maritimes, and Quebec grew up with these amenities so view them as basic city infrastructure.

Halifax has the exact same 'park culture' you speak of. There are well designed parks and gardens right in the downtown (Point Pleasant Park, Public Gardens, The Citadel, Halifax Commons, etc.) and they're heavily used.

He also designed Toronto's High Park. Also somebody said other cities would build on their hills.... I Have not seen that in any major city. They are tough to build on so are generally left as green space,

Rome was built on seven hills. Boston was built on three hills and they call it "the City on a Hill, after the whole Biblical thing about cities on hills.

You don’t even have to look elsewhere.. mount Royal has 3 summits, only one is unbuild. Upper Westmount is fully build on the hill.

I used to live quite close to Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery, so I would walk there at least once every couple of weeks. It is the largest cemetery in Canada and second largest in North America. It is stunning and haunted at the same time. Lots of famous people are interred there, there are many cool mausoleums, tombs and headstones, and plenty of mafiosi.

Summit woods is intact at the top of Westmount.

No he didn't.

High Park was (in typical Toronto fashion) developed in a piecemeal fashion by multiple landscape architects, starting with the original land owner John G. Howard. Olmstead was never involved.

The hills in Boston are barely that though. Their prominence range between 10 and 20 m with very smooth grades. Not exactly the same as building on a proper hill.

Yes, but I meant that Upper Westmount is all on the hill, not that the hill itself is fully build :-)

Central Park was co-designed by Olmsted and Vaux, with Olmsted being the junior of the two. Their company designed a number of parks in Brooklyn and Manhattan, a suburb in Chicago, and notably for this thread Rockwood Park in Saint John, along with a slew of others.

I've lived in NB now for 32 years. I've never been to Rockwood Park in SJ, but I've heard good things. I might have to give it a visit sometime.
