This is definitely Navy Yard 2.0.

Remember the initial renderings for the Navy Yard? Very suburban, but it transformed the area. Now? The Navy Yard is building up and densifying.

I can see the same thing happening for "The Bellwether District." This is an incredible project in my opinion. The plans for park space and way it meets the waterfront first and foremost is incredible. Second of all, the northern section of the site seems to be geared towards life sciences. Then, the southern section of the site seems geared towards logistics.

I think this is brilliant as Philadelphia's future is in life sciences and logistics, and really, the economy of the future is tech, life sciences and logistics.

Thirdly, while there's parking now, these are just the initial plans/first round of things. Lets start getting some of this built, then see how it evolves. Eventually, like the Navy Yard, it will start to densify as the area gets more built out and demand for the area increases.

Lastly, building this is a HUGE boost to the area. This will help further the redevelopment of Grays Ferry and Point Breeze, and could help spur development through Southwest Philly, and make these neighborhoods some of the hottest and most desirable in Philadelphia.

I lived in Louisiana for a bit. I'm excited that Cane's is coming here, but also that I don't live too close to their Philly location.

The redevelopment for the HILCO site, i know they said distribution, but some of the renderings show what looks like office, medical, and/or apartments along the river and a block back or so, could they possibly be making some of it mixed use?

Honestly I hope they do that's a massive section to redevelop, and with medical and bio going the way they are more lab space would be a bonus for this area, along with commercial and residential along the river to liven up the area

Im looking at the aerial shot they show at the end of there video, it shows a decent amount of leftover space nearby and over the railyard to be built on possibly too!

IDK if the railyard can be built over but I can dream right? Lol

I don't think there's any residential. Too contaminated?

But it's definitely not just distribution any more. Light/advanced manufacturing and life sciences are definitely a key part of the equation.

Eastside Yard is still a major CSX Yard. Won't be leaving anytime soon.

Every mile of El trackage west of Millbourne is what is called “direct fixation.” This means that the rails are held in by clips and tie plates, which are in turn held in by fasteners directly into the concrete structure. This is slightly different in some underground sections, where you have wooden ties laid in insets in the roadbed that are in turn fixed in place. Re-gauging the entire line to 4’8.5” from 5’2.25” would require tearing up all of this concrete and pouring completely new plinths the entire length of the El. This is expensive and incredibly difficult to justify.

They didn’t re-gauge it in the early 2000s when the section from 46th westward was redone because that would have also required doing the rest of the line, which SEPTA did not have the money for (or really, the care for).

Re-gauging the track also doesn’t account for what is honestly the bigger problem: the loading gauge. For those uninformed, the loading gauge refers to the clearances along the line that restrict car dimensions (platforms, ceilings, etc). The cut-and-cover method used to construct the line downtown from 24th to 2nd resulted in its incredibly low ceilings. There’s only like 3 feet between the top of Market and the ceiling of the El in some sections. In addition, the platforms are rather close to the tracks, which is no doubt related to the non-standard track gauge the El uses.

Compare this again to the Broad Street Line and Ridge Spur. These were built after the El in the 1920s. By then, they had learned some lessons on subway construction, and built the line with wide and tall loading gauges. This is why the BSL (and, consequentially, PATCO) feel so much roomier than the El.

To give an example of how small MFL cars are: Right now the Kobe Electric Railway trains that service my station are 9.17 feet wide, just like the MFL, but the cars are 60 feet long, 5 feet longer than the MFL. However, the Keihan 800 series is even smaller, at 8 feet wide and 54 feet 2 inches long. It's also worth pointing out that these trains through-run on the Kyoto Subway Tozai Line, which only began operation in 1997!

Interestingly, JR West equipment, such as the 225 Series, is quite large at 9 feet 8 inches wide and 64 feet wide. Equipment used on Japan's standard-gauge railways, however, is somewhat smaller: the Hanshin 9000 Series is 9 feet 2 inches wide and 62 inches long, making it only a hair larger than the Kobe Electric Railway equipment that services my home station.
