It is the Lyon St. on ramp that is closed until November 2025. Given that it is only a 650m "detour*" along Catharine St. (which is a one way street), I don't see it as being a massive inconvenience.

The Bronson exit ramp closure is certainly more of an inconvenience, but it is only for 10 months. Interesting they aren't suggesting the use of the Rochester off ramp (to Orangeville, to Booth, to Carling) as a detour.

* it is along a parallel route, and doesn't make the trip any longer, just a bit slower.

Orangeville is also closed until 2025 between Rochester and Booth, which would require drivers to either go up to Gladstone or down to Norman to access Booth.

And with the detour they did suggest by way of the Kent Street exit, it's also a little over 650 m down Catherine (a one way street).

CBC also says November 21, 2025, so I don't think it is a typo.

The combined Bronson WB Off/Lyon WB On is trash anyway, I wish they would just close Lyon on-ramp forever.

EB/WB outer lanes are closing for 3 years and a variety of shorter closures for some of the other ramps:

Construction galore on Highway 417
The Queensway, it seems, is going to be a very busy place for the next few years.

Blair Crawford, Ottawa Citizen
Publishing date: Aug 29, 2021 • 13 hours ago • 2 minute read

Goodbye Lyon Street on-ramp. See you in four years.

According to the city, the ramp to westbound Highway 417 will be closed until November 2025 “to replace retaining walls, noise barrier walls and repair existing infrastructure along the highway.”

But four years?

For a more detailed explanation of the work, we turned to the Ministry of Transportation. The Queensway, it seems, is going to be a very busy place for the next few years.

The Lyon Street on-ramp closure is just part of the ongoing Highway 417/The Queensway mid-town bridge replacement program, Simi Ikotun, an issues management co-ordinator with the Ministry of Transportation, said in an email.

“As part of this project, the ministry will be replacing a total of 11 bridges over the next 4.5 years using rapid bridge replacement technology,” Ikotun wrote.

“In addition to the bridge replacement work, the Queensway will be reconstructed between O-train bridge and Kent Street. Reconstruction will include new retaining wall and noise barrier systems, drainage, electrical and ATMS (automated traffic management) systems.

“To safely complete this work in the various stages, the closure of the Lyon Street westbound on-ramp will be required from Aug. 23, 2021 to Nov. 21, 2025.”

The Bronson exit from the eastbound 417 is also closed as part of the same project, but for a shorter time. It’s expected to re-open in June 2022.

The Bronson west on-ramp will remain open, he said, except for some periodic nighttime closures and on the weekends of the rapid bridge replacements.

Rapid replacements of the Queensway’s aging bridges was pioneered in 2007 when a new overpass at Island Park Drive was rolled into place over one weekend. Since then, they’ve become almost routine. Details of the 11 new bridge replacements will be announced closer to the operation dates, Ikotun wrote.

Meanwhile, work is continuing to resolve one of the city’s most hazardous intersections: the crazy criss-cross exchange of traffic exiting the westbound 417 and trying to turn south on Kirkwood Avenue.

“Modifications include two dedicated left turning lanes onto Kirkwood Avenue southbound, thereby eliminating the weave from the Queensway westbound off-ramp to Kirkwood Avenue southbound, new left-turn lane at Saigon Court as well as new traffic signals at Saigon Court and Carling Avenue eastbound,” Ikotun wrote.

But that work comes at a cost. Northbound Kirkwood has been reduced to one lane, leading to rush-hour logjams stretching under the Queensway through eastbound Carling. The Kirkwood interchange work is expected to be complete by the fall of 2022.

A1 Mini Storage demolition has started. Part of the highway widening/bridge replacements project.

From this angle, you can really see one of the big issues along here. The cantilevering lane of the highway! Crazy what was done in the past.

Does anyone know if this property was properly expropriated? Is this lane going to be re-built on-grade, or is it going to be rebuilt this way?

From what I've read and heard, yes, it was properly expropriated.

And yes, the cantilevering of the highway has apparently caused ongoing maintenance issues, and so once that building is down they plan to build a slope on which to support that section of the highway.

Fun fact: some of the awnings from the front of that building were removed and donated to the re-Cycles shop at 445 Catherine (at our request). We've already installed two of them.

I thought this was just a crappy 70s or so metal siding storage unit. Was happy to see it go. Now that I see what was under there... Could have been some amazing office space or residential lofts. We have very few cool industrial buildings like that in Ottawa. Can't help it wonder what other cheap siding is hiding an amazing heritage warehouse.

Not sure when it was built, but looking at the areal photographs on geoottawa, that building was there in the first photograph in 1928 (when the 417 was a rail line), so it was at least 93 years old.

The cantilevering of the highway is pretty neat way to literally get around a business.

Alas, a lot of neat ideas just didn't hold up under the conditions of reality. Especially in harsh climates.

The 417 westbound exit at Carling will have no left turn on Kirkwood when ongoing construction is done.
The pink line shows the way by Saigon St.

This is a clusterf*ck. And then we wonder why there are so many accidents and traffic jams..

So many closures and detours.

Never understood why Carling had this weird loop design under the 417. I wish they would've rebuilt it in straight line.

Someone somewhere said it might have to do with the Dairy plant, but nothing to back that up.

GeoOttawa's historic photographs offer no clues as to why it was built this way.

Wait, this is simplifying a disastrous clusterf*ck of an intersection. The existing setup allows cars exiting the freeway to cut across 4 lanes of traffic and turn onto Kirkwood south. It is dangerous and very poorly setup. There are collisions and near collisions here constantly. This streamlines everything and makes the intersection much safer.
