Am I correct in assuming the long 4-storey building is a proposed hotel? Admittedly I just breezed through the city documents as my old laptop was having trouble dealing with the large drawings contained within the pdf.

Edit: Haha... just had to look further up in this thread for the answer...

At 297ft above the lowest grade this would be the second tallest building in Halifax to the roof. Although it's 28 stories the machine room area is almost 2 floors more.

I'm curious how Brightwork fits in with this. Renderings were released in early 2021 and some media outlets reported that construction would begin. Not sure if that has changed and where it would be built in relation to this larger phase that's now being discussed.

The crane base has been installed for the 27 storey building and the 4 storey hotel.

It's not a big standout in the context of all the construction around the city but is quite tall compared to the other buildings in downtown Dartmouth. It will completely change the look of the Dartmouth skyline, hopefully for the better. One could even argue that the Dartmouth skyline will have nicer aesthetics in terms of having peaks where Halifax is increasingly a tabletop.

The "feel" of the harbour is going to change with North End buildings and these taller buildings in Dartmouth. It will feel like there are significant highrises off in the distance in many directions, whereas in the past it was pretty much just downtown Halifax and some medium-sized buildings. To me this is one possible qualitative distinction between a "small" and "medium" city. The small cities have one compact downtown area with an urban feel while the medium-sized cities are more extensive and take a while to explore.

Agreed. And the change will be all the more dramatic when/if the approved and proposed towers near the Dartmouth bridge plaza go up. There's also another WM Fares proposal for a 30-storey tower ("Flow Towers") on the corner of Alderney Drive and the proposed extension of Dundas Street, immediately north/east of Kings Wharf on Alderney.

Sweet, I'll be downtown tonight. I'll see if I can get a shot before dark, and if not try to use the other buildings as back lighting.

A local online news source which shall go unnamed is reporting today that Fares and his new backers expect to have a second, 24-storey tower underway "within the next year".

There's a new crane going up there. Is it related to this?

Different buildings, same street (Kings Wharf Place), both part of the Kings Wharf development. The crane is on the site of the 27-storey tower which is about go up on the corner of Alderney Drive. The developer is saying work will start within a year on another 24-storey tower further down the street.

I assume the current occupants (and would be buyers) are aware and accepting of living next to a massive decade long construction site which will ultimately obstruct many of their views, and this is reflected in pricing of existing units?
