Swimming pools get a lot of use and if you know anyone with kids who swim, it's pretty impossible to book into lessons. There is a lot of demand for another pool. More residents will use it.

Agreed. Definitely a swimming pool before a hockey arena.

Swimming is a cheap form of recreation that anyone can do; hockey is quite expensive. We have a ton of rinks already in the city, but very few pools.

Swimming pools before any more rinks or rink enhancements.

Well everyone can't do it which is probably an issue. I'd be interested to see some actual statistics on supply and demand between hockey and swimming, etc. Far as I can tell baseball is the most over supplied sport in the city with well over 100 diamonds in the city. Though thankfully it seems like the city has stopped building them regularly like they did pre-2000.

Question being though, where should this indoor pool be located?

Northwest and Southeast Regina would be out of the question since there's already the North West and Sandra Schmirler Leisure Centers, and downtown has the Lawson Aquatic Centre.

My money is that it'll likely be located in the Southwest, or relatively Northeastern Regina.

To my knowledge, Lawson is pretty much at end of life.

With HCMA partnering on the new aquatic facility (they also partnered with the City of Regina for the new Maple Leaf Pool and the upcoming new Wascana Pool), I think the new Lawson will be a gorgeous facility (when it finally gets built). I hope for more windows rather than the triangle cave covered in shingles as it currently is. The floor print could be expanded further east and also more towards the sidewalks too. The former training field for the Riders could be turned into more parking if needed.

I think the current central location makes sense, and also would be great for the communities it is currently near.

I checked out their website and really like their projects and their design. Regina needs something refreshing that can be a major hub for many community services.

Would this project also include replacement of the Fieldhouse side of the complex? They mention the pool/aquatic centre, but don't mention the other side. An all-new facility would be great for Regina but would be quite pricey.

Something interesting: while checking out HCMA projects, I stumbled upon the Building Edmonton site (HCMA is doing a project there) and what a breath of fresh air when it comes to projects.

It's just interesting to see timeline and budget updates on city projects. I feel like a lot of stuff goes unchecked in Regina. For example, it's taken a private crew MONTHS to replace the sidewalks and pave 2 blocks of Allen Ave. in Lakeview, leaving those residents without safe access to their homes.

Thanks for sharing. So much of that article reflects the reality facing Regina as well. Many of our "towers" were built during the same time frame. This quote really hits the nail on the head: "Today, it’s a place of brown concrete and mirrored glass"

I expect some of them do not want to. Some do not like the rules/structure. The Mayor said there are vacancies in the shelters, but is often hard to convince them to go. Many cities in N. America are having identical issues. If you enable people to camp in parks, they will. I understand why people are helping them by bringing them supplies and such, but the best help would be to convince them to go to shelters. A big part of this is providing mental health and addiction resources, which we all know are sorely lacking.

Spend some time talking to the people that operate the shelters, as well as the police, and you soon understand they are in a crisis situation... it is a situation that has been neglected and underfunded for years, and there is only so much they can do with limited resources. They are at a braking point.

Yes, from what I understand the shelters are all full.

A couple of city councilors are talking about the homeless situation, but I think it's bigger than that. We need provincial help. The city doesn't have the money to deal with it. It can barely afford to deal with the critical stuff like lead pipes and service.
