They had changed the final design.

The red is obviously a nod to the legion/veterans. It is fine, not the nicest tower but solid for the area. And that it has the veterans/legion component is cool

Thanks.
I think the red spandrel will be more prominent than the red mullions would have been.

What a turd. I really want to hear from the architect what his rationale is for wall-papering a spandrel curve onto a rectangular box. It would've looked better if they simply did red spandrel bars all the away across all the floors

The red mullions were neat. The red spandrel looks tacky, like something out of the 70s. At least it allowed for additional balconies I guess.

I don't think the architect or designer made this decision. Normally, this kind of decision has to be made due to cost. The project manager or whoever control the cost made such decision and the architect/designer had to change the design based on that decision. I used to work as an exhibition designer. I always wanted to design the best exhibition booths possible but the sales rep always wanted me to make the design simpler to reduce cost since they want a larger profit margin for their sales.

It could be the case. The design just became simpler and ordinary after the modification.

It's the architect or developer clinging to the original concept:

I spent a few years in Edmonton. This turd reminds me of the dog shit that went up there.

Given the purpose of the building and more importantly where the funding is coming from, not the end of the world I guess.

We'd be excited if something like this went up in Edmonton.

That's comically sad and stupid. If I had to be overt with the Vimy Ridge imagery given the budget, I'd just do minimalist boxes each with a protruding fin wall forming the profile of the memorial that faces a similar fin wall on the opposite tower. Or just oversized pillars for a entry glass canopy that is shaped like the memorial lol.

I've said it many times in the past, not every tower is going to be a Mona Lisa. I agree it looks a lot less iconic now with the cost cutting measures but it is still important for the area.

Well, it doesn't cost more money not to be ugly. Like this tower is going out of its way to be ugly. Not asking for Mona Lisa here. But don't be whatever this is.

Which design is the final design btw? I see 3-4 different designs posted.

At a minimum, the architects and Legion members (or whomever is running the project) think it isn't ugly. I suspect if you took a representative sample of the neighborhood and asked them what they think of the design, plenty would shrug their shoulders.

It's fine.

I'm hoping that this one will turn out better than the rendering when built.

Good point but my point was that when you get into "meh" territory it becomes quite subjective (not that beauty isn't always subjective to one extent). The reality to me is it is meh not ugly but not great either. The other issue to me is that it has drifted so far from the original concept and we're seeing the drift with so many changing designs. Typically that doesn't happen with a tower, there can be a concept but the difference between it and the final is often not that drastic.

Take the new mega tower in Surrey Central. There has already been some changes in just a few months from the original concept but they are super minor in scope and mainly window dressing down low.

But yah it is subjective. I happen to hate exposed concrete for example. Some people absolutely love it. But anything with just exposed concrete to me (think 3 Civic, or Surrey Central library) is ugly and looks unfinished. They will always look unfinished to me. Even if they painted it grey it would look better to me than exposed concrete. Just bugs me.

There are a lot of people that absolutely love that look and that's fine.
