This is embarrassing. I’m sure this has been asked before but what can the league or Argos actually do to fix a mess this catastrophic? It’s not even like the Argos are bad I’d say they’re the third best team in the league atm.

I’ve been reading on Reddit that the solution is too get another team out in the suburbs. Not sure it would do much but the CFL has to make fixing the Argos (and to a lower extent Lions and Als) attendance a top priority.

Even though it’s a risky venture because of Covid it might be time for the CFL to really take a look at rapid Canadian expansion. Something radical like 3 new teams in the next decade.
Atlantic Canada for sure.
Quebec City?
Kelowna/Vernon?
London?
Windsor?

I am worried Argos will host the east final this year and might only get 7000 fans to the game its atrocious.
It's only "atrocious" if people make it so. Continually focusing on it negatively does actually zero good. Like Morgan Freeman says, how do you stop racism, quit talking about it. There's enough trolls trying to kill the league, real fans don't need to help them, and real fans already know the problems and don't need to be told. This isn't burying one's head in the sand it's pragmatism. Test pilots about to crash aren't thinking I'm going to die, their attitude is how do I get out of this problem.

I would be worried if the bills weren't being paid, whatever losses the Argos are sustaining, and I doubt they are as high as you are making up, are chump change to MLSE. Nobody likes to lose money but there's more going on in the interplay backstage with TSN and the league than we know about.

If people would stop decrying the league and maybe add some positivity things would look far better. Check out what Doman in BC is saying, there's nothing wrong with the product it's just a matter of rebuilding the fanbase which is an ongoing project for someone willing to do the work.

I haven't seen too many people talk about the loss of TFC's secondary fanbase, they're not doing much better than the Argos but it's the CFL where some people always want to say that the sky is falling.

Almost every league has franchise issues and so does this one but why people want to focus on them is beyond me. I'd start worrying when MLSE wants to get rid of them.

If I'm an Elks fan then this bit with Eddie Steele getting fired for speaking the truth on the radio would be the last straw. You know the heat is really on Brock Sunderland when he can't take some fair criticism.

Edmonton is starting to resemble the Bombers when Joe Mack and Mike Kelly were in charge and that is not a thing that you want to be.

Saw that; disappointing on a variety of levels.

Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and another team in BC either Kelowna or Victoria it doesn’t really matter. It will make every team able to stay in their respective divisions and create two new rivalries with Montreal-Quebec and Vancouver-Kelowna/Victoria.

Believe me, the fanbase was very upset with all that's occured this week, from Eddie Steele to the rumor of Joey Moss being banned from the locker room.

Not a good look for what once was a very proud franchise.

Well, as long as there are owners who want to put up the money in those cities, I'm all for it. But Atlantic Canada keeps stalling, I don't know if there is an appetite for a team in Kelowna or Victoria and I've heard/read that Quebec City is all about Laval and Montreal may be opposed due to territorial rights.

JONES: The only quick fix is to win for image-battered Edmonton Elks
There were lifelong fans ready to divorce the football team following a report that general manager Brock Sunderland had “banned” Joey Moss from the dressing room in the final months before the death of the beloved locker-room attendant
Terry Jones Edmonton Sun Oct 07, 2021

When a team of tradition that’s supposed to be up near the top of the standings drops to the bottom halfway through the season, there’s going to be noise — a lot of noise. There’s going to be grief.

With the Edmonton Elks, much of it has been earned. Some of it has been unearned. They don’t deserve it all.

There were lifelong fans ready to divorce the football team Wednesday with a report that general manager Brock Sunderland had “banned” Joey Moss from the team dressing room in the final months before the death of the beloved locker-room attendant.

I checked that one out with Adam Walker, Moss’s nephew who has been the Moss family spokesperson since Moss’s death.

“I can assure you the Edmonton Elks always included Joey within the organization until the time he was no longer able to work,” said Walker. “The Elks continue to support Joey and his legacy 50-50 in 2020 raised nearly half a million dollars for the Joey Moss Memorial Fund. The Elks have also hired two individuals from the Winnifred Stewart Employment Program. They have been an outstanding organization and have always treated Joey with the highest respect.”

Walker then sent an almost identical statement out on behalf of the family that the Elks posted on their website.

But that didn’t end it. A significant number of people on social media rushed to point out that Walker hadn’t actually denied that Sunderland had banned Joey.

I got back to him on that.

“Let me be more clear,” he responded via email. “Joey was never banned from the dressing room, Terry. Joey had dementia. Over the last couple of years, it became harder for Joey to go to work. But I really don’t think his health is anyone’s business. Joey was welcomed everywhere. The Moss family has nothing but respect for the Elks and they were nothing but class to Joey.”

The rest of the noise has been much more normal, if you can call firing a second-string halftime and post-game analyst with debatable credentials by the rights-holding radio station normal.

Fire the coach. Gas the general manager. Can the CEO.

In exceptionally short form, I already fired coach Jaime Elizondo in print after the team lost the last game in Ottawa. I believe GM Brock Sunderland gave Elizondo what should be a 5-2 team to this point and he coached it to 2-5.

But I also believe both Sunderland and CEO Chris Presson deserve to be sanctioned in many areas for continually forgetting they work for a community-owned franchise with a proud history and tradition of the way they treat people in the organization from an equipment man of 49 years to many season-ticket holders of long standing that are upset they can’t get a friendly voice on the phone to discuss a situation and a long list of other complaints.

Some of that is likely going to survive the season regardless and require a deep dive analysis by EE chair Ian Murray and the back-to-being-the-Nervous-Nine board of directors at the end of the season.

In the meantime, there’s only one way to make some of the noise go away and that, in the words of Oakland Raiders’ legend Al Davis, is this: “Just win, baby.”

The trouble with that is it might be too late.

It’s like this. The Elks, after losing for the second time this season to the worst team in the league, now have put themselves in position where they pretty much have to go to Winnipeg on Friday and beat the best team in the league.

If Edmonton doesn’t win in Winnipeg, it would probably punt them so far back not only in terms of possible playoff positioning but also in the damage done as an organization in minds of so many, that you wonder what the damage might be, short-term and long-term.

If Winnipeg wins to go 7-1, they would take one more step toward securing their first home West Division final in 49 years and leave Edmonton at 2-6 with six games to play this coronavirus pandemic-shortened season.

Yes, the Elks could lose and return to Commonwealth Stadium against the same Blue Bombers team next Friday and run the table and still finish over .500.

But a loss in Winnipeg would make it three straight losses, and remember, the Elks have a four-game losing streak at home and end the season with three games on the road in three different time zones over seven days.

Having Calgary, Winnipeg, Winnipeg, Hamilton and Saskatchewan in consecutive fall home regular-season games looked like a sensational stretch to sell tickets when the schedule came out, but …
There’s been a great deal of damage done to the image of the EE football organization, again earned or unearned, in a great many areas that’s going to possibly take a great deal of time, effort and money to repair.

On the field, the Elks have dug themselves a deep hole but at least they haven’t totally run out of hope of digging themselves out. It’s just that the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have put themselves in position to shovel dirt on top of them in that hole this weekend and/or next weekend.

For the Elks, in so many different directions, this is a game with an unbelievable amount of hair on it. And they’re not playing against air.

Bombers defense has to start getting in the conversation as one of the greatest cfl defenses of all time now. Only 3 points allowed and Harris only 87 yards passing last night the herbivore Elks are a mess. They are averaging less points per game allowed than the 1985 chicago bears right now!

It was a great night at IG Field... the Bombers made their share of mistakes and the less said about the kicking game the better, but they still came away with a dominant 30-3 victory. They're getting close to locking up first in the west!

27388 in attendance last night at the Bombers game pretty good considering how bad Edmonton is the air was very smokey and hard to breath last night in Winnipeg due to forest fires and the Bombers had no real season tickets drive this off-season as no one knew if there would be a season until 6 weeks before the season started.

^ I was at the game and I didn't really notice any air quality issues... granted, I don't have any sensitivities to that. But it was nothing like in the summer when there was thick smoke permeating the city.

There was a large and lively crowd last night, people were into it. Warm night for October. Good vibes all around. An amazing time to be a Bomber fan.

Even though I'm not from Calgary and am not as familiar with the landscape as the locals might be, I think that the fieldhouse was/is likely the best solution. Apparently, the city and fieldhouse boosters have had an athletic fieldhouse on the radar for a long time and the city is due for a new stadium. Taking into account the new realities, something in the 25-30k range would suffice where the track could be architecturally negated when not needed.

Now is not the time unless there is a push for public projects and the will of the people and the city would have to be there (that I don't know)

What a terrible game; those first two plays really set the tone.

Top to bottom, left to right... brutal.

That looks like a university gym or practice facility. I'm shocked they'd even bother presenting something like this. That it's being considered blows my mind. What Winnipeg and Regina built should be the standard to which all CFL stadia should meet. If Lethbridge proposed this it would be understandable, but Calgary?

Yup. That thing is horrendous. They just need to spruce up McMahon, put new seats in like Edmonton did, reduce capacity with more seating room, and expand the concourses/make more modern. McMahon stadium itself is a great stadium as far as sight lines and.
