So I'm just gonna assume the city didnt look at the NCC plans regarding the new segregated pathway being built right now or they assume a bike lane going in the middle of a soccer field is fine

What I'm saying is that the NCC is spending a lot of money building a nice path with segregated lanes for cyclist and pedestrian right now and the city's plan would mean having all that money wasted and having the path rerouted because the city and NCC dont talk to eachother

These Lebreton plans are like 20 years away from being built, the path will have to be re-imagined by then anyway.

Not according to this article https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-new...-includes-decision-on-new-major-facility

However, two of the more interesting projects slotted into the early phase are a municipal park and a possible major event centre.

The cost of the path will be in the $100,000 range at the top end and there is no way to work around it if the city wants to turn the area into an actual park with sports fields.

If any thing needs to be adjusted is the NCC path routing.

According to this press release following today's NCC board of director. The next phase after the Library Parcel will be the "Event center"/Destination Facility.

Quote:
The NCC is analyzing options and developing an approach to seek proposals for potential destination facilities at LeBreton Flats and attract at least one significant anchor in the arts, culture, sports, or recreation sectors. Two sites in the Master Concept Plan are identified as potential locations for a major event centre, or other destination uses. The first site is located on the north side of Albert Street between City Centre Avenue and Preston Street, and the second site is referred to as LeBreton Place, located in the heart of LeBreton Flats...We will update the public once we have determined our preferred approach, and will launch our process later this fall.

So, I guess that means no NHL rink. Unless the City and OSEG step-up to bleed-out Melnyk.

Here's to hoping the process to seek destination uses for LeBreton place leads to bidders for the sens as well. Or, at least puts pressure on Melnyk to work with the city. This seems like the best case scenario even if I can't see Melnyk attached in any way.

Phasing plan for LeBreton. Very disjointed IMO. They should star with everything around the library first, up Booth second, the rest of the aqueduct and then up Albert to Bayview (since this is likely not a good time for the Sens).

Agreed, with this strategy it's going to take a significant amount of time for any semblance of urban fabric to form.

Why does every NIMBY want a library? Grow up and live with the times, everything is online, I agree with a community centre, but Libraries? Jeeesh, why dont you ask for a Blockbuster to be built as well and ban people from accessing Netflix in the area

This is an extremely narrow take. Libraries have all sorts of material that isn’t online, as well as programming and community resources. I’d also point out that people still read books. And how is asking for a library in any way akin to a ban on Netflix?

When was the last time you were in a library? You might be surprised to know that they are extremely busy places, even with the “internet”.

I don't know what planet you are from but big cities accross Canada and around the world have been building new central libraries at a rapid pace in recent years. These institutions act as meeting places, repositories of information, and offer many different community services. Not to mention that they are a chance for cities to showcase some amazing architecture that reflects their surrounding city and natural environments alike. Also, bring back Blockbuster! I used to love going their every Friday night with my girlfriend to pick out a movie. Would ALWAYS run into friends and I loved the thrill of trying to get the newest release that may or may not be available!

For reference, see Calgary, Helsinki, Qatar, Austin, Tianjin, Alexandria...... for some great examples of beautiful and functional modern libraries!

Calgary

Qatar

Tianjin

Stuttgart

Alexandria

Yale

Sorry, I could look at this stuff all day!

I would take Blockbuster over Netflix any day. Speaking of which, libraries in Ottawa have an excellent selection of DVDs and Blue Rays.

Tianjin Library with its epic wall of fake books is one of my favourites too!
