It's really funny to me this is the start of off the ground construction for the site as a whole. I really like how the angle you framed Bayview station makes it look. I think it's style is aging really well at least for now.

Yeah I really like the style of the new stations. Not groundbreaking or anything, but a fairly timeless modern design language akin to the Berlin Hauptbanhof, which is almost 20 years old but looks as good as anything built today. They will certainly age better than the old red tube design language of the Transitway.

Patch of grass at Tom Brown will be used for TNext parking, instead of, you know, the fenced-off patch of brown that was used as a staging area in phase 1. Mechanicsville will therefore have no access to Tom Brown, Laroche and Lemieux Island.

Went for a walk to YOW over the weekend, and got to view the pillars on Hunt Club that are brutal, along with some of the progress of the rest of the airport spur.

The pillar ‘issue’ has been addressed. They look that way because no finishing concrete will be applied as they will be buried and grade will be brought up the underside of the beams.

Also, thanks for the pics!

I have been driving through Riverside South quite regularly lately. There is still a lot of work to complete the right of way between Bowesville Road and Limebank Road. They only just starting to build the embankments leading to the Bowesville and Limebank overpasses.

I have to comment on how far the Limebank terminus is from the parts of Riverside South that are already built or under construction. Nobody is currently within reasonable walking distance. It is too bad it couldn't have been built to the Riverview Park n Ride where people actually live and to make proper use of that facility, but we all know how our rapid transit investments have to produce an underwhelming result.

Hoping to see a good medium density, 15-minute neighbourhood core at Limebank within the next decade, though I'm not getting my hopes up based on the City's track record, all talk and no action.

Passing by on the SE Transitway on a regular basis, I see the bridge being constructed over the VIA rail tracks between Walkley and Heron are only set up for a single track.

Why on earth would this massive bridge not be built to be able to upgrade to a double track. Seems like a massive waste of an opportunity.

I assume you are talking about the Ellwood diamond crossing? The bridge is long enough to allow VIA to add double track in the future and is designed so that it can be widened to support double track in the future. Their thought is that they don’t need it to be double tracked now so save that expense until later.

That's a weird answer from everyone. 'No finishing concrete'? Columns don't need 'finishing concrete'. The forms provide a smooth finish.

Are these old columns? For the life of me, I can't understand what's causing that look to them.

1. Old-Column theory: This is ongoing freeze-thaw damage of the old columns, and was deemed to be surficial and could remain.

2. New-Column theory: The formwork failed when the new columns were being poured (and these are chipper marks). The concrete was then chipped to create the proper diameter, and nobody bothered to parge over them (parging always fails anyways).

The columns are new. It's pretty unclear how they ended up looking the way that they do, but the info about the columns being buried was provided to Councillor Brockington (who then tweeted it).

From my limited understanding, to get nice looking, smooth columns, they need to use a different concrete mix with extra sand in the aggregate. They also need to make sure the pour is very well vibrated to get rid of all of the air bubbles, but not too much as it can lead to segregation. Extra care needs to be made to ensure the release agent is uniformly applied to the mould. All of this costs money, and if they are planning on burying them anyway, why bother.

Ottawa has received its first two of seven Stadler FLIRTs, the new fleet (which will run along side the existing six Alstom LINTs, two will run on the airport spur, the other four will be combined into two train sets).

The Rail Fans Canada Discord has been discontinued:

https://www.railfans.ca/news/discontinuation-of-the-rail-fans-canada-discord-server

The website continues to post regular Snapshot Updates and news on the O-Train, Montreal Metro, TTC Subway and other rail operations in Canada.

https://www.railfans.ca/

YouTube and Twitter are also still active:

https://www.youtube.com/c/RailFansCanada

https://twitter.com/intent/follow?origin...n=follow_link&screen_name=RailFansCanada

If you're not already part of the community, I recommend RMTransit Discord, which is similar to the old Rail Fans Canada, but with a more international focus (with of course sections for individual Canadian cities as well).
