I've always been a fan the the Renaissance Tower in Dallas, really just because of the spire and patterning on the glass that makes it stand out far more than the typical "blue glass rectangle." If only we had something similar for a building here, outside of the Fairmont's spire that really just makes it look like a juice box.

If only the Renaissance Tower in Dallas wasn't surrounded by a giant parking lot. It would look great in an actual urban setting!

Now that's a hot take.

I just looked at some pics of that building, and I envision much teeth gnashing amongst the folks here if that was proposed in Austin.

I'm personally not a fan.

It's also become quite clear that many people have become absolutely numb for lack of a better word to how amazing the last 20 years have been in regards to highrise construction in this city.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I'm always surprised to see so much negativity.

I've been here since the 80s. Maybe the newer folks are numb. I'll just say rather than numb, I am keenly aware of the products we are and keep getting. The lack of imagination is stellar with many of the designs, If we weren't still...at the moment, a second tier city, we might have new and exciting architecture. Google sail exempt. At least we are over the 500 foot plateau for the most part. This is a nice building albeit nothing to write home about.

I feel the exact same way as you. Yeah this building isn't anything to write home about but it's a nice addition.

It's funny -- as much as I consider this infill, it's also one of the tallest things around at the moment. Not really imposing, per se, but definitely recognizable.

405 Colorado actually looks really nice. Gulp, did I actually say that?? I think from this day forward, I'm going to reserve judgement until a project is completed. I was so wrong about this one.

bad design we are stuck with for how long? And not Affordable housing.... Be patient and wait for better design or better public use. At least one of the 2.

I wouldn't call this a "bad design". It's understated, it's utilitarian, it's not unattractive, it's nothing to write home about architecturally. Eventually it will be drowned out in the skyline and today isn't obtrusive (in my opinion anyways, and I know aesthetics are largely matters of opinion). But it will house hundreds of people on a quarter-block, as lobotomizer pointed out. With the surrounding areas sprawling out of control, I am always happy to see dense housing centrally. A grander design would almost certainly mean even less affordable homes than we already see (though I'm assuming they paid the fee-in-lieu, but I didn't have time to rescan the entire thread). Until the city updates the density bonus guidelines, we won't see much more affordable housing in DT proper.

Compared to 300 new SFH's tearing up 100 acres of pristine hill country (plus the hundreds of new cars otherwise added to our roadways everyday), I can't possibly think of this as an eyesore!

Agreed. This isn't a bad design. It's respectable for a mediocre tower. The Ashton is horrible. The Four Seasons is horrible. Not this one. This one is ok with me.

cautions praise for mediocre design.....
We deserve better.
As a wise friend said: We will grow UP AND OUT .... best do both well.
I'm still all about waiting for great or even good design.
Be patient for better.

Yeah, I mean I guess if this were ever actually the way things worked.

Devils advocate but if I were a developer I would only ever care enough about design insofar as it helps me sell units/lease floors.
