Well we truly do need more units. They were promising units priced for middle income people but the city likely wasn't buying it.

100%. The 46 storey New Town tower proposed is my personal favourite tower proposed in Kelowna. Love the architectural design. I wonder if it would get supported around where the 42 storey was approved.

I always wondered at what height does the cost of the structure per unit start to exceed the savings they get splitting the land per unit?

8 storey apartment proposed for Rutland Road

Nice looking medium-density building proposed for Rutland Road next to the Dominos/Starbucks.

Basic, but nice to see retail at ground. Bring on the supply! Not everything needs to be fancy. We need units.

Not the prettiest, but it doesn't need to be. It's rental, will likely be somewhat affordable, and provides more density and retail at grade in Rutland. Rutland won't have the more luxury-oriented units of downtown or Pandosy, and doesn't need them. It's a different demographic, and should be a more affordable, student or working-class oriented neighbourhood.

It's not bad. Looks like a concrete building. I wonder if they could've gone for 2-4 extra storeys if that was the case or is that building height reserved for along Hwy 33? Rents will be mid range at lowest ($2,200+ a month for a two bedroom)

Nice project. Kelowna needs more of these types of developments right now.

I talked to a security guy at the Bertram site today, and he told me the cranes for Bertram and The Block office will be going up in early November, another guy who I talked to didn’t work on the site but was in construction said it looks like the cranes are ready to go up any day now. You can see the spots where the cranes will be located , just wish I could follow the process of the whole construction process a little closer. Landmark 7 is also on its last floor for windows, I’ll try to grab some photos when I’m downtown again.

BC Housing tower on Bertram Street got the go ahead today:

https://www.castanet.net/news/Kelowna/347810/Bertram-tower-going-ahead

In other news I spoke with the sales team at Water Street By The Park and was told that demolition for towers 1 and 2 (24 and 42 stories) will start in December.

Wow! So we may have 4 or 5 towers u/c at the same time downtown? Amazing!

Also, 48 floors!? I thought it was shorter than that… (42?)

Still pretty darn impressive.

So I am guessing sales went well for those towers?

It looks that way. There are the two towers that are part of the Brooklyn development (one office, one condo), the two towers on Leon (Water towers), and this Bertram one.

Downtown will be humming with construction in 2022.

Come hell or high water I will be in the Okanagan next summer, so will be a great time to get some pics.

And the lack of deep pits in Kelowna means that once construction starts cranes are on site rather quickly.

Sounds like it! Tower 1 sold out in 48 hours and there are apparently only a few units left in tower 2. Tower 3 sales start next month.

Was talking to … today (who is in the trades and lives in Kelowna) and … told me that the crane that collapsed was brand new. It was the contractor’s first time disassembling it, and they didn’t have anyone from the manufacturer on site to assist them (which is common apparently for doing such the first time)

Not sure if this is all already know / how accurate it is. But just seems that if true the majority of fault looks to be on the crane contractor.

What an absolute tragedy.

A father lost his sons and business all in one go. Unreal.

Was in town this past weekend. Can't wait to see the rest of Bernard Block go up, crane prep and locations are in place. Fencing around the BC housing project, and it looks like the final building of Central Green is finally moving forward. I noticed crane preperation on site there as well.
