In the accompanying article (which I posted in the Census thread), there is some acknowledgement of the impact of gentrification, but it appears the consensus was that minority residents were undercounted because they were intimidated by politicization of the Census questionnaire and/or distracted by dealing with COVID.

I would interject that the decline in immigration from Central America and Mexico may also have played a role in declining Census numbers.

Elysian Valley - 6,897 - 6,123 - −11%

I think there was a severe undercount in some of these neighborhoods that supposedly "lost" population. I don't believe these counts. Many refused to be counted because of immigration concerns. L.A. is over 4,000,000. 100% certain. Maybe 4.2 million.

Not returning your census form is not the same as not being counted. When forms aren't returned, the census will estimate the number of people that live at a residence.

And I'm sure that many get missed. Estimating is obviously imprecise. Also if 6 people live in a household and due to concerns regarding legal status the form is returned stating that 4 live there, then that's it. Two are missed.

That said, that happens every census and I don't know that it was any more significant this census than last. The number of undocumented living in LA now is less than it was for the last two censuses. The numbers of undocumented in the neighborhoods listed with declining populations is probably significantly less due to gentrification.

I think that what's going on is smaller households and decreased immigration. As a hypothetical example, Highland Park houses that had 5 people living in them in 2010 may now have only 2 people or maybe 3. There are fewer people per household and not much new housing to makeup the difference.

Is it just me, or do the arches on the new 6th Street viaduct look, well, rough?

Re: Brookfield

The extreme change in grade makes the tower appear shorter than it actually is, so views of the 777 tower are safe.

I'm guessing they'll get sanded for a smoother finish.

Agree. Smaller households, gentrification, less illegals, immigrants foregoing these areas compared to past flows.

The data included demographics and the increased white and Asian proportions also seem to reflect that.

I’m looking everywhere for this news and haven’t found it. So many Grand Hotels in downtown!!. Is this the Grand Avenue Project’s Hotel you are speaking of?? Or Wilshire Grand Hotel… or the LA Grand Hotel on Fig?? Haha. I’m assuming you mean the Grand Avenue Project’s (now known as The Grand LA) hotel will no longer be an Equinox and will be a Hilton branded Conrad. Also looking through the renderings on the website, they seem to have deleted all Equinox logos and gym information. We not only lost the hotel, but also the 2nd Equinox branded downtown location. This must be because the current downtown location was heavily dependent on office workers and USC students. It was a super busy gym and downtown could have easily supported 2 locations pre-shutdown. Casualties…

We went from Mandarin Oriental to Equinox Hotel to a CONRAD!!! How boring and NOT destination worthy. Hilton could have at least given us a LXR branded hotel.

The Grand LA project by Related. Equinox is not really a hotel brand, being a brand of 1 hotel in NYC, and more known for overpriced gyms. The Equinox hotel in NYC isnt as nice overall as the Conrads in that market imo. LXR isn't a brand either, it is a collection of individual luxury hotels like the Oceana in Santa Monica or the Crockfords in Las Vegas, so probably doesnt fix whatever business rationale Related may have had. Mandarin Oriental never fit this market.

Ive travelled to probably 15 or so of the 40ish Conrads, and they are mostly every bit as cool, food centric, luxurious as the Equinox NY, which is the only indicator of what was to be the Equinox LA.

Dont fret. It'll still be solid, Im pretty sure. I think it will still be a great cool non boring addition to LA.

Conrad is a solid high-end brand. The only brand above that at Hilton is the Waldorf class.

I'm only bummed because I use the DTLA Equinox and was looking forward to a snazzy new location

I'm sure if things really turn around they'll open more. Maybe inside Oceanwide when it opens in 2042

I read on this forum that 1000 hill is supposed to break ground this month. Any updates on that? I walked by the site yesterday and nothing.

The parking lot next to the site right off Broadway has been reserved for "Onni" for at least a month now, but not sure if that was related to the big production team that set up there for the last few weeks. Otherwise yea I haven't seen any indication.
