I like the crown in the form that it is. I think it complements the base....

Yeah, I'm not a fan of spires, except in New York. And, of course, pyramidal "pointy" topped buildings, but...yeah, this one just doesn't need that. It's really perfect as is. This might be the most beautiful supertall in America since the Chrysler Building. I don't think it's a coincidence it'll be next door to it.

I agree. If there’s any building worthy of standing next to (and above) the Chrysler, it’s this one. It’s Chrysler without being Chrysler. I think a spire would make it less original.

i cant argue with that. the only downside is in case of trouble we won't be able to get to the choppa, but very nice work!

and its always just cool to see mock ups of these flat tops with spires anyway, just to see what they would look like.

I love the base of this building as well, very Chryslery, and a good fit for the area in general. It wouldn't look out of place.

I love this building as is. The crown is fantastic. Adding a spire would make it taller, but unnecessary. I'm not a huge fan of One Vandy but this one, together with the Chrysler, will really be a looker.

This building does not need a pointy hat

Yep. I just meant that I'm not a fan of spires. I was always neutral on them until Austin got two sizeable buildings with them. One of them I'm not a fan of and think the spire is silly and looks tacked on, and the other is one of my favorite buildings in the city and I feel like the spire is integral to the design.

Atlanta is probably one of the only other cities that I feel like they do a good job of spires and "pointy" tops looking like they belong together. None of those gratuitous tacked on spires to add height. There are others to be sure, and other buildings elsewhere, but yeah, I feel like Atlanta does it well also in a way that is even a decent nod to New York.

Anyway, I guess if this one had originally been planned and announced with a spire I might not question it, but seeing it in this state without one...I just don't think it needs it. Besides, it's not like New York hasn't had some great flat roofed buildings in the past.

I don't think of this as being a flat roofed building, but more of a crown, along the lines of Woolworth Building, or something more recent like Steinway or 9 DeKalb. Something other than a flat roof like Central Park Tower or 432 Park Avenue.

this is a building where i am much more concerned with the base than the crown, because that is where so many people will interact with it on a daily basis. and this has one of the most magnificent bases ever imagined. lets not loose sight of the grand base!

that said, it looks like the crown resolves very well too. i do wish it wasnt a flat top tho.

The crown will be somewhat open, reminding me a little of the GE building...

In another alternate reality, one in which Chrysler was for whatever reason never built, I think I’d love this building with a more pointed spire. That way, it would kinda “mirror” One Vanderbilt.

But in this reality, I think it’s fine as is.

Agreed. I just meant not pointy like 40 Wall or 70 Pine and others.

And to even expand on that, this one and One Vanderbilt would have been in a battle for the tallest.
