To be clear, I have previously stated on this thread my support for this public washroom. The city is also thinking of putting one up on the plaza in front of the Avenir Centre too. I also think this is a good idea as well, especially given all the public activities that routinely occur on the plaza.

Another thread I keep an eye on has closed public comments on the topic due to the vitriol. The comments on CBC also were interesting (to say the least).

I'm old enough to remember that you were rich if you had 25 cents.

You could get a bottle of pop (10 cents, with a 2 cent deposit), a bag of chips (5 cents), a chocolate bar (also 5 cents), and three penny candies.

Those were the days..........

It's quite an exciting time for Downtown Moncton! There is a lot of stuff happening and I have a feeling it's just the beginning!

There's so much untapped potential downtown.

I'm glad to see the Higgins building being rejuvenated. For years it was such an eyesore with the boarded up windows.

And when the work at the Service NB offices is completed, the existing temporary location right on Main Street is another prime location screaming for development.

To be fair, I think the vast majority of those who are up in arms is because they will be/are being used as injection sites.
Not that I give a shit (see what I did there? LOL) one way or the other.

My only beef is the price tag, $300,000 per unit. Sorry, I don't need a 5 Star rated toilet room to have an emergency P & S. I'm all for adding public washrooms in the downtown core. As previously stated, there are a few along the riverfront trail. They just need regular 10 minute washing with a can of Scrubbing Bubbles and water flush with garden hose. There's already city staff maintaining these units. For the downtown Main st units, you just need the same type of units except maybe with a slightly better exterior upgrade. Now you have 5 units on Main for the price of 1 fancy Luxury $300k toilet.

100 years ago an outhouse on Main Street would be a sign your town didn't have plumbing yet. Could they not set it down a side street facing a windowless wall? It's a terribly prominent location for people to stagger in and out of, shooting up, all day.

That is indeed a hefty price.
I can only dream of owning a car and a house together that comes close to that price!
I might have to go use the thing, just to enjoy the ultra-luxurious

surroundings for a few minutes. I can only assume there is a hot tub and sauna included, and a man-servant.

No man servant, but maybe a towel boy (I've been to high end restaurants in places like San Francisco where there were towel boys in the bathroom - it was kinda creepy).

If you use this facility, make sure you don't accidentally sit on a needle.

In any event, it is what it is - if this is the going rate for a self cleaning public toilet, there isn't too much the city can do about it. We'll just have to accept the fact. Public toilets in high profile locations like the city hall plaza or the Avenir Centre plaza will always be more expensive and of higher quality than a loo located on the Riverfront Trail.

It's better to deal with the causes of society's ills than to hide them so we can pretend they aren't there. Honestly, I wish there were more public amenities like this. Having access to a decent bathroom should be a given no matter who you are - specifically one that doesn't come with the expectation of buying something.

As for the price tag, I agree on first glance that it does seem steep for a public bathroom. But all the emphasis is on seem. I have no idea what the city actually got for that money. I haven't done any digging into the public records. I doubt any of you have, either. It's easy to cast judgement on gut feelings, but it isn't fair to jump to conclusions.

Have zero issue with the pricetag or the usage. Major cities and places around the world have public washrooms in useful places for people to use. You can FUD all you like about things that may or may not go on there, or to encourage more anti-unhoused sentiment or city design, but at the end of the day these things are used routinely by both taxpayers and tourists. I know someone talks similarly re: Halifax and people complaining about spending on things, but it's incredibly small-town to moan about a couple bucks for a public washroom. You guys have bigger fish to fry than that.

For me, I hate having to duck into a hotel or a Tim's to have to use a washroom when i'm out somewhere, so public washrooms are always welcome.

A contact of mine noted that there were people looking around inside the old Piatta Pizzeria space in the National Bank Building downtown today. Perhaps a prospective tenant checking things out???

Not much information here to go on. Building "H" is the two storey structure in the image below, facing directly onto Millennium Blvd.

They must be planning on building this as one of the first structures in the development, which is odd, since when they made their pitch to city council, they seemed to indicate that the buildout would progress from west to east. Perhaps they have found a tenant for this building.
