I so, so wished that Calatrava had designed that museum. Anything he designs and gets built automatically becomes a tourist attraction, like the Milwaukee museum on their lakefront, with the rising and collapsing bird wings. Nothing like it anywhere else! Truly unique and a treasure to those living in Milwaukee.

Of the skyscrapers under construction now, I'm most excited about the 9th and Fig tower. I think it will really complete that part of downtown, and make it feel considerably more urban. Brookfield has great height, but it's kind of in no man's land sandwiched between the freeway and the mall. The hotel across from Staples...eh, ok. Not a ton to get excited about there.

What do people think will be the next tower to start construction? I hope the old LA Times project gets going soon. The whole Civic Center area could use a shot in the arm.

1000 S Hill was mentioned a couple of pages back and that seems reasonable given Onni's record.

Or the 24 story job in Chinatown, that was supposed to start in July. I drive by it regularly and shoring steel has been dropped off, so hope that one starts digging soon.

Not strictly development, but it looks like Equinox might have pulled out of The Grand project. They were supposed to have the left side building be the second Equinox Hotel, after the first one at Hudson Yards NYC. You can see on archive.org that the "Equinox Hotel" was changed to "Luxury Hotel" on The Grand project website around May 2021. Lots of reporting on their financial issues but also that they were looking to go public so...

Is there a thread for it in Projects and Construction?

What 9th and Fig tower? Did I miss something? Great news if I did!

^ I think edale is referring to the 8th & Fig tower that's currently working on it's first levels above ground.

I'd love for a concerted effort (perhaps by Treepeople or City Plants) to increase the tree canopy of DTLA with types of trees that fit well in the urban landscape.

Agreed. Broadway has literally no trees. I have always thought the Broadway corridor lined with jacarandas would be absolutely stunning! How can we make this happen??

That would be great. New, expanded / wider sidewalks with stone, jacarandas and historic lighting.

Jacarandas are beautiful trees when they bloom, but they aren't the best urban street trees. They grow out quite a bit, and the flowers create a HUGE mess when they fall. Great for lining the sidewalks of parks, but not the best for Broadway or any street where buildings line the sidewalks. Buenos Aires has them all over their parks and they are beautiful, but you won't find them lining streets in Recoleta, for example.

Some Canary Island Date Palms lined down the street would do the trick, they don't produce much litter and are quite quintessential LA.

Yeah, I would say a hard no to Jacarandas on Broadway. They are pretty, but can leave the sidewalks looking really gross, and that is already a huge problem with Broadway/the Historic Core. The sidewalks and public realm all look/are pretty filthy, and we don't need anything to make that worse!

Crepe myrtles would be a nice street tree for commercial corridor with a mix of others. They aren't that tall maybe 20 ft max so it won't block business natural light. Thin trunks that won't uproot sidewalks or take up sidewalksspace, different colorful flowers, in summer to fall.some light filter, leaves fall off in Nov. Not really good for residential streets since they aren't shading much or tall.
