And here's roughly how to calculate the total for an MSA without doing any arithmetic (though in this case it looks like everything is in Cook County).

https://mtgis-server.geo.census.gov/...Default&f=html

edit: maybe I sent too many queries, my access seems to be gone now. hopefully it will come back soon .

I'll get the Bay Area done.

Note I'll get two numbers, San Francisco and San Jose MSAs, using the most recent (2020) definitions.

Another metric (and this would take a SHIT TON of work so no worries if we never get this info) would be comparing the 2020 numbers of people living in 20,000+/sq mi census tracts to the 2010 data.

And then....

Determining % change

And then....

Comparing whose is growing faster.

My guess is that NY and Chi, perhaps SF are seeing the highest % growth rate, with Chicago probably being the highest due to a lower denominator.

Nearly all of Chicago's losses occurred in areas that were below 20,000 ppsm anyhow, whereas all of its white hot growth occurred in areas that were already pretty dense to begin with.

Ok fellas, get to work. Get me that data, and do it quick. Post haste! Stop being slackers

20k strips out a lot more of the Bay suburbia than I expected. San Francisco itself is 633,797 of that.

Philly is next

Here's SF + Marin + Alameda + San Mateo + Contra Costa. : 899,765.

Probably other counties are included in the MSA (Solano? Sonoma?) but doubtful they have much density anyway

Thanks for the double check. Here is the definitions PDF. Indeed, San Francisco MSA is still 5 counties.

For Boston, I get 727,666

(my query, hopefully didn't mistype anything!: https://mtgis-server.geo.census.gov/...Default&f=html )

and an easy one, Honolulu: 182,167 (https://mtgis-server.geo.census.gov/...Default&f=html )

I'll have to learn how to use the query tool! For now, a couple more using the map-and-tally method:

Dallas: 50,418
Atlanta: 24,362

I agree on Boston!

Washington DC will be fun.

Meanwhile, Honolulu is an overlooked density node.

Just take one of my queries and change the states/counties (adding more of each if necessary) and it will tally it up. Until you get rejected from the server like I now have done on two computers . Note that I'm being lazy and assuming the same county doesn't appear in multiple MSA's in multiple relevant states, though you could also just do one county at a time and it wouldn't be too bad...

I am going county by county (using the map to see which ones have >10k as a filter).

Atlanta was quick though. 8 such tracts in all of Georgia, all 8 in Fulton County.

The Texas metros:

New York: 9,151,543
Los Angeles: 1,919,006
Chicago: 1,238,801
San Francisco: 899,765
Philadelphia: 841,729
Boston: 727,666
Miami: 396,021
Honolulu: 182,167
Seattle: 160,101
San Diego: 103,421
Houston: 88,080
San Jose: 64,724
Dallas: 54,893
Minneapolis: 52,998
Denver: 49,423
Milwaukee: 47,988
Providence: 39,442
Portland: 38,057
Madison: 35,514
Columbus: 31,592
Atlanta: 26,589
Austin: 23,224

San Antonio and El Paso: Goose eggs.

I believe I found a few tracts in the Vegas metro. It likely will not add up to much.

New rule: keeping metros over 20,000 people total

New York: 9,151,543
Los Angeles: 1,919,006
Chicago: 1,238,801
San Francisco: 899,765
Philadelphia: 841,729
Boston: 727,666
Miami: 396,021
Honolulu: 182,167
Seattle: 160,101
San Diego: 103,421
Houston: 88,080
San Jose: 64,724
Dallas: 54,893
Minneapolis: 52,998
Denver: 49,423
Milwaukee: 47,988
Providence: 39,442
Portland: 38,057
Madison: 35,514
Columbus: 31,592
Atlanta: 26,589
Las Vegas: 26,114
Austin: 23,224
Champaign: 22,271

For comparison: Pittsburgh is 13,077. Buffalo surprisingly is another 0.

PVD (well, all of Rhode Island, not including Fall River/ New Bedford): 30,224

https://mtgis-server.geo.census.gov/...Default&f=html

All of Tennessee has 2309 people in census tracts above 20k, from one census tract in Knoxville (so Memphis and Nashville have none).

Indiana has 8,044 people in census tracts above 20k in one tract in Lafayette.

Michigan has 3 counties with census tracts above 20k, with populations:
Wayne: 4,656
Washtenaw (Ann Arbor): 6,052
Ingham (East Lansing, presumably): 11896

North Carolina has one tract with 2000 people in Mecklenburg County (Charlotte)

Outside of Dallas/Houston/Austin, Lubbock has 6,374 people (presumably Texas Tech housing, but I didn't check).

Surprisingly to me, Las Vegas has 26,144 people and Reno has 2,049.

Phoenix has 20,351 (13,807 in Maricopa, 6,544 in Pinal) and Tucson has 5,138.

Iowa City has 4,165 and Ames has 4,837, both presumably student housing.

Cleveland has 3,431 and Cincinnati 3,836.

Idaho has 7,781 in Madison County (Rexburg, perhaps? I think there's a BYU branch there).

Utah has 13,203 in Utah County (probably also BYU)

Alabama, Kentucky, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, West Virginia, Alaska, Montana have zero.

For Metro Detroit I got 2 tracts, one in Hamtramck, and the other in Ann Arbor,
This number is quite pathetic when compared with its peers and even smaller metros.

Detroit:10,708

Miami: 396,021
Honolulu: 182,167
Seattle: 160,101
San Diego: 103,421

Are you including Allentown with Philly? Looks like Lehigh County would make the cut with 29,319: https://mtgis-server.geo.census.gov/...Default&f=html

Also Worcester County in Massachusetts is 26,374!

No, since Allentown is outside the MSA. Likewise for Boulder with Denver. Added Allentown.

I tried the query tool but my search was 'rejected.'

Anybody want to run a query with Census tracts of, say, 30,000+ ppsm?
