That Montreal is becoming more similar to Sydney (in terms of skyline).

Compared to the previous form that for about 25 years consisted of 5 major skyscrapers dominating everything else with lots of shorter buildings that didn't have much skyline presence, it's becoming a larger, denser mass of buildings with roof heights topping out in the low-mid 200m range and descending with little break just like Sydney was for many years. Their CBD always had a large number of 150m+ buildings for the size of the city (more than Toronto for many years) but with strict height limits. They've actually completed a couple taller buildings recently, but that'll take some time to get used to.

skylines are wickedly awesome to us skyscraper geeks, but what really matters is life on the ground, and downtown Montreal does it better than most if not all other cities in Canada. I am much less concerned about sore thumb skylines (Edmonton) vs. table-top (Vancouver until very recently) if the street life is outstanding. Melbourne street life is arguably better than Sydney's, at least going from my own personal experiences.

To be clear, it was intended as a descriptive statement rather than a normative statement. Not that there's anything wrong with making value judgements; I just don't have terribly strong feelings either way. It's just interesting to see how what we consider to be the classic long term forms of cities can change over fairly short periods of time.

Never heard Montreal compared to Sydney in this way before... but I like it. Far worse cities/skylines to be compared to.

Sydney itself seems to be coming out of its own Sydney-ficiation with a new tallest under construction, so fingers crossed for Montreal as well!

Speaking of Montreal's changing skyline, we can already see in this picture how much of an impact the National Bank tower (combined with Victoria sur le Parc) will have... Both will be higher than Tour de la Bourse.

The quality of the individual buildings in Toronto has drastically declined from when Sydney was outpacing Toronto in 500 footers by 2 to 1. I'm afraid Montreal is next in line. Same buyers, designers and, builders for the most part. I'm not much of a fan of Australian design. It's gimmicky usually trying very hard to push the envelope without the talent behind it. (Toronto has been going that direction) What I really appreciate about it is that the infill is actual infill. (not sure Melbourne or Sydney or both) In Toronto and what seems to be happening in Montreal is intensification through a block busting assemblage over squeezing a tower within an existing block.

A very large proportion (probably 80%) of the projects being build in this current boom in Montreal are being build on surface parking lots.

Good one! I've always wanted to see that angle..Ironically, I came down Bank Street today and tried to snap a cell phone pic while stopped at the lights just South of the Transit way, but I wasn't high enough..Another good angle is Montreal road just East of St. Laurent blvd. The vantage point is on a hill..I posted a pic of that angle a few years ago, but lost it since..Lots of OH wires though!.
