There's a difference between architecture enthusiasts and skyline fetishists.

Skyline fetishists don't really care about architecture, they care about "How many floors???!!!"

The architecture is secondary, thirdary (is that a word?)

I see no architecture being celebrated here simply floor counts

Not that anything being built in Canada is particularly tall by world standards. Sub top 200.

Which makes this doubly weird.

We're not building great architecture nor are we building top 200 tall buildings.

WTF are we celebrating?

Mind-numbing mediocrity and private equity fund tax scams. That's my guess.

Edit: And I have to mention the build quality. How do you think these hastily-built "With today's speculator in mind" cheapo, corner cut (but with marble countertop) buildings are going to fare in the future?

It's not going to be pretty, there are already examples.

So little of this current crop of crap is going to be around in 50 years so, other than as remnants of "We haven't yet gotten around to clearing this urban blight, so much of it was inexplicably built during the Real Estate Douchebag era". (RED era)

Documentaries will be made.

But hey, check out that skyline enhancement! World Klass!

Huge difference between architecture and skylines though. (This site is slightly more the latter, at least on paper.)

My ideal forum would be about architecture, personally. But SSP is about as close as it gets.

Too busy? Lmao, all you have is time! Pretty sure u are one of them cuz those 400 others certainly have spent less time moaning about this on the internet than you have

I'm a Montrealer and I don't know anybody - not one single person, Franco or Anglo, who is even aware of this great 'controversy'.
I guess there's forum consensus that these 400 are stupid, plus Lio's hypothetical 500 from the other 75% of the country who would react similarly if the situation was reversed lol

No, I'm actually super busy these days. Even my SSP activity has gone down sharply (you haven't noticed?) which is a sure sign that I'm REALLY extraordinarily occupied with important things.

Then you're not looking very hard.

I'm sorry that your impression of this site bothers you so much? Still makes me wonder why you choose to spend your time here.

I think its just his coping mechanism. Every now and then when his ego takes a hit in his personal life, habsmanfan creates another SSP profile to tell everyone else how much better than us he is.

Feel better soon, bud!

Maybe it's because of the far more interesting conversations that occur here in 95% of the threads other than than the typically stupid 'how tall?' or 'look at our skyline as seen from a drone!!' threads.

Don't sell the site short, it's 95% not about your dreams of erections.

Or so it seems..

And I might add, for some of us who have been around a bit, the 'skyline' of our favourite cities is a 'WTF? Who cares?'

Because most of us experience the wonderfulness of cities from the ground up and not from pictures of 'clumps of buildings' on the internet.

Important distinction.

The "Look at our skyline" mentality is very much a third-world, we're trying too hard kind of thing that masks a 'don't look at our obvious failures' mindset.

If a city wants you to look at their skyline rather than the city itself, you know that there's not much to see it that shit city.

Dubai comes to mind.

What are you going to do there, look at the tall buildings then go to the Dubai Museum?

There are actually quite a few things to do. Where else can you go to a restaurant that serves Iranian kabobs, flanked by one that serves Syrian kabobs, which is flanked by one serving Indian kabobs and have a sit down meal at all three for less than $10 combined? The skyscrapers are just where the westerners live/work or what you put up with if you want to go to the beach front (which is really nice too). If you want to experience Dubai, head to Deira.

I don't even care that much about tall buildings man but whatever. It just seems kind of dickish to, pretty much right off the bat, loudly and repeatedly complain about people who do... when they're the ones who created this site, ostensibly for that purpose

So nice of them to have a bunch of non-francophone women spew a bunch of ill-informed stereotypes and crap about francophones. I thought we were in 2021 and that the "nothing about us without us" rule applied? Why doesn't it apply to francophones too?

It doesn't apply for many groups depending on context. That's not a value judgment BTW, but an observation of life in 2021.

I don't think the 'American woman' is the enemy here, either. I could see how someone outside the country could be legitimately confused about the topic, much as some people from outside never understood why the passions ran so deep in places like Northern Ireland.

Admittedly, the responses do cater to The Social's audience pretty well - who are probably well into their retired years and represents Canada of old. I am legitimately trying to think of someone under the age of 55 who watches The Social and am failing at it.

Ironically, that American lady seems to "get it" more than the Canadians on CTV.

t.
You're correct at least about the American woman. She does not appear in the video. The participants are all just reacting to her comments which were (mostly) sympathetic to the Québécois view of things. I linked to her piece in another post.

None of the CTV panelists were actually sympathetic to the Québécois view of things. (Though a few tried to pretend they were before lashing out.)

Yes, it doesn't apply in 2021 to certain groups based on largely arbitrary and often entirely strategic considerations. I know.

Not lashing out at you BTW.
