i've not seen anything compiled yet, but you can add them up yourself from the county figures.

Detroit MSA 2010 actual: 4,296,250

Detroit MSA: 2020 estimate: 4,304,136 (+0.2%)

Detroit MSA: 2020 actual: 4,392,041

2010 - 2020 MSA growth: 95,791 (+2.2%)


so another big swing and a miss for the CB on metro detroit.

Probably lack of housing and not so great transit to support density.

Do you know what they use in the diversity index?

For example, a Mexican American is very different from a Mexican national, the same is true for Asian immigrants and Asian Americans and European immigrants and European Americans.

I think it's a decent color scheme. You've got 2 very different colors (red and blue) to characterize 2 different schemes (gaining and declining), then have gradations for each of the two colors.

Though usually red is shown as a loss and green is shown as a gain.

A lot of new residents also keep official addresses outside the city due to insurance rates which makes it worse. Where are the metro numbers?

Predictably, the Detroit homer has issues with data showing that Detroit is still in free fall. A resurgent downtown/inner core can't overcome the continued hollowing out of the neighborhoods. I think this is what people mean when they say the Detroit revitalization narrative is a bit overstated. Pockets of the city are making great strides, but the city overall is still experiencing substantial decline.

I prefer red/green and colors between to show the contrasts.

But I also like Red Hot and Blue Cold.

If I did my quick math right, Grand Rapids' MSA further solidified its position as a 1,000,000+ metro:

MSA - 2010: 993,670
MSA - 2020: 1,087,592

EDIT: The CSA was already above 1,000,000, as of the 2010 census. It gained about 100,000 residents:

CSA - 2010: 1,320,064
CSA - 2020: 1,423,632

I'm a little surprised that Grand Rapids (city) did not breach the 200,000 mark (at least, according to the CB data). The 2019 estimates pegged it at 201,000+. It fell short by ~ 1,100 residents:

City - 2010: 188,040
City - 2020: 198,917

Kent County (home to Grand Rapids) had healthy growth, at 9.2%. And neighboring Ottawa County had the largest percent growth in the entire state of Michigan, at 12.3%, which contributes to Grand Rapids' MSA & CSA growth.

Thus gaining a neat geographical record: the 1M+ metro farthest from another 1M+ metro on Earth. (Auckland, New Zealand was the previous record holder iirc.)

Those counties are "red hot?" And the hotter the population growth, the more red hot the color!

And the blue counties are "sad" because they're losing population. That is, they're "blue."
