With the added Penguins exhibits I wonder if a Polar theme could be done? It would be cool to have a limited area of the zoo open in the winter with Polar Bears, Moose, Wolves, Penguins and seals as the exhibits.

I’ve also often thought this would be a perfect place for an Aquarium. Since the Bay of Fundy and Northumberland Strait have some unique ecosystems and a lot of fishing, it would be neat to have an Aquarium with local (and foreign) aqua life.

I wonder if/when those expansions start, it might be a good time to create either a Magnetic Hill Zoo thread or maybe just a [Moncton] Attractions thread to track developments at the Zoo and Magnetic Hill and Casino and other projects.

In any case, this sounds like it could be a major overhaul/expansion to the Zoo. It was great when I visited (for the first time) a few years ago, and I hope I won't wait as long to go again in the future.

Apparently Justin Trudeau was in Moncton today to announce funding. I imagine preliminary work will begin immediately with construction starting next summer and commencing in 2024 for phase 1.

JT was in Moncton today, but I have seen nothing about any funding announcement for the zoo. This seemed to be a pre-election visit where he visited a vaccination clinic to trumpet the feds success at securing vaccine doses, and also talking about abortion access in NB (strange to do this in Moncton where both hospitals provide abortion services rather than in Freddy which is the centre of the controversy).

Do you know something we don't, or were you just speculating?

I was just assuming honestly. I heard from someone that he was in town and figured it was related to this announcement.

I didn't hear the press conference live so I could be wrong but I believe the abortion access issue was raised because of a reporter question and wasn't part of the planned remarks. Same as when he was asked about Montreals draft pick.

I found it funny seeing the old coliseum as the backdrop for a PM visit of all places although it's obvious why he chose that location. Perhaps they should have moved the clinic to the Avenir for the day

The Planning Advisory Committee recommends that Moncton City Council not proceed with the Zoning By-law amendment to allow for this development, but final approval does reside with city council, and if they do decide to allow this to proceed, PAC made a number of recommendations regarding conditions.

I personally can't imagine city council will allow this self storage facility be built, but stranger things have happened. We will continue to keep an eye on this.

The proposed professional building (and apartment building) at Mountain/Bulman has received PAC approval.

A traffic study was performed, and, it appears that traffic signals will be installed at the Mountain/Bulman intersection in 2022. That will be three new sets of traffic signals west of Gorge on Mountain Road in the space of two years.

There is a new Shannex campus proposed for the Pinehurst neighbourhood behind NBCC, adjacent to Wheeler Blvd.

It will be much like the Shannex campus at UdeM off of Morton.

Apparently land clearing has commenced. Construction is slated to start in September.

The exterior of the new JessEm Tools manufacturing plant in the MID West Industrial Park is complete and awaiting signage.

The photo probably doesn't do this building justice. It is actually quite a large facility.

The new traffic lights at Mountain & Charles Lutes are now flashing. They will be fully activated on August 11th.

Still no signs of new activity as far as the lights at Ensley & Mountain are concerned.

Crazy how many new units are going up in the north end. I think it's time for a grocery store to open up near the Home Hardware. Thoughts?

I think it’s only a matter of time before we see a grocery store up there. Even in some of the land behind IHOP and Petro-Can. Within 10 years or sooner I can see a Sobeys, Shoppers and Dollarama being built in this area.

Sobeys has owned the land adjacent to the Home Hardware for years. Southeast of Home Hardware, south of the TCH and north of Mountain Road.
