The… structure… immediately east of that Poplar project… what happened?

I’d drive by it almost daily on my way to high school. The ground floor is pretty good, but once you get above… it’s like they ran out of money.

right? a subway would be nice, but this is everything I ever wanted on the parkway as a pedestrian. The main site has videos and PDFs of each of the 3 design proposals. They all appear to be proposing something similar, but the DLANDSTUDIO+DIGSAU one seems lacking to me. Design Workshop was the rending on the WHYY story.

Completely agree with you although I think you went a little easy on DLANDSTUDIO+DIGSAU. Their presentation and ideas are a far distant third to the other two. Very bland and non-specific. You could use their talking points, with minor modifications, and apply them to any park in any city in any part of the world. It felt like a cut and paste job. I love the bold bold and specific ideas from Design Workshop. At this point, their ideas are on top.

Highly recommend taking a few minutes to view the short videos and skim through the PDFs. Its all very exciting.

Does anyone know who makes these decisions? Does Mike Carroll just make the call? Is there any kind of transparent process in place?

That Amazon warehouse is such a waste. Also on a completely different note, I just biked past the parking lot at 5th and Bainbridge and it looked like they were drilling for soil tests. Is there any planned projects in that area?

3 years ago there were plans for a nice mixed used building with a mini Target, but I thought it was killed by NIMBYs (after 2 handsome rowhomes were demolished obviously). Any grocery store here would kill it.

Funny enough people on the Facebook Philly development group were happy amazon was building there because it

"PROVIDED MORE JOBS THEN SEPTA"

So no one protested about it and here we are now. a amazon warehouse in the middle of a neighborhood, I guess banging vans and trucks is better then trolley sounds.

That is the same group where people go nuts over basically any new high-end residential development, and also went nuts when Starbucks opened in Dilworth Park. I actually find it odd that the usual kooks are supportive of this... Some people on there have very odd perceptions of reality...

Jobs are great, but I find the Septa plan much more beneficial, plus Hilco is in the process of creating millions of square feet of warehouse space not too far east of this site.

Incorrect. SEPTA did NOT exercise eminent domain at all.

Sorry, I was confusing what a source had told me.

What had happened was this land was approved for eminent domain, but before SEPTA could exercise this, Amazon "outbid" them (which technically is not supposed to be able to happen).

This completely threw off all hope of the trolley modernization.

This is the real travesty here. I don't think an Amazon warehouse is an inherently bad use, and the neighborhood will benefit from it I think. But it would probably have benefited a lot more from an ambitious trolley re-design that would more truly connect the neighborhood to itself and the rest of the city. The political momentum for getting big transit projects started is now, we needed this to be shovel-ready now. Now I'm afraid it'll get passed over for federal money if they don't figure out a solution soon. I don't see any good reason why they couldn't put an Amazon warehouse somewhere else nearby, there is a ton of vacant industrial land in SW Philly.

SEPTA leadership seems to have accepted that they'll have to come up with a plan B for the maintenance facility; it may be sub-optimal, but it won't put the kibosh on the trolley modernization project. There's plenty of time to figure it out, considering the actual trolley acquisition phase was already set to not happen until the fiscal years 2027 through 2033.
