Whatever your thoughts are toward this company and it's labour...this is a poor time for such a post. Hard working young men lost their lives and many families have been devastated. Learn to filter.

Wow this is fucked up

A coworker told me about this at work a couple of days ago but I forgot all about it until I just saw it mentioned on the news. I wouldn't have expected any casualties as just the top of the crane collapsed while it was being dismantled but boy was I wrong, somehow 4 people were killed. On top of everything else i'm sure this will be the end of Mission Group

With tall cranes, it has to dismantle itself with the help of a sizable crew until it's low enough that a mobile crane can do the rest of the work.

The two brothers who owned the company were up there. It's miraculous that one person was able to get himself to safety.

When I was in Kitimat a few weeks back I met a crew that was assembling the tower cranes. They were just finishing and heading to Kelowna next to dismantle a crane. watching how they did the step down at the Stantec Tower, you could see where an error even minor could be catastrophic.

sad when anything happens and we loose someone.

Condolences to the families.

Such a tragedy to hit Kelowna.

Didn’t crane collapses also result in casualties when constructing One Wall Centre and the North Arm Canada Line Bridge?

BC seems to have some bad luck with cranes.

I don't remember any casualties building One Wall Center and there's no mention of it on Wikipedia:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Wall_Centre

The death toll over the Kelowna crane is up to 5 now so I guess they found another person

Crazy

I can’t imagine it being the end of mission group. I’d think the people responsible for the crane collapsing would be the people who own the crane company. Despite mission group being the ones who hired them.

Mission Group is a very well connected company and has been in business for decades. I doubt this will make them go out of business.

I haven't heard anyone mention the name of the crane company in the media but i've sure heard about Mission Group and PR like this is disastrous for any company even if they're not directly responsible

Anyone know if Mission Group hired a GC for this project or did they decide to be their own GC? Kerkhoff is building One Water Street while ITC build Ella.

I learned from the media that 2 of the brothers who were killed were part owners of the crane company because apparently it was their dads company. Which is pretty sad to lose both sons in this accident. I’ve also been hearing that they weren’t abiding my safety regulations. Workers dismantling the crane weren’t wearing hard hats or any other protective gear. The supervisor filming the job site instead of paying attention to the task at hand.

Has anybody heard any news about the proposed mass timber tower addition to the Ramada Inn? Did Covid put a hold on that plan? I seem to remember it was supposed to start this year.

Looks like the city is in bed with Mission Group if you ask me.

That's too bad they are going to build a 46 story building. That would have been pretty exciting. Seems strange to me when so many taller buildings have been approved in Kelowna.

Just noticed the land for "The Wedge" is now listed for sale for $590k.

I guess the project wasn't really feasible.

That —, out of all the taller proposals this tower looked the sharpest / had the most promise IMO.

—, that — too!

After ramping up over the last year this summer has been terrible for Kelowna development wise.

Of course the crane disaster.

The rejection and loss of the two projects above.

And the proposal of that European Disney Villa monstrosity.
