I drove past those old apartments on the north-east corner of 200 S 300 W the other day and noticed that they were getting a paint job and some new siding. I think there was some concern that they might be torn down awhile ago. The new actually looked pretty nice and didn't look like the type of investment you would put into a property if the plan was to demo it.

The Jackson apartments were actually just repainted a few years ago. They kept them the same beige color but added some white highlights.

The earthquake in 2020 caused damage to the building. They had scaffolding around the building for a good year following the earthquake. A lot of brick was replaced and they also added earthquake reinforcement to the structure. So it had to be repainted again. This time it looks like they are going with gray instead of beige… which I think will be a nice change.

It also appears that they replaced all of the windows and blinds in the building. If I had to guess I bet they are updating the apartments and converting them to market rate. It was probably very expensive to save that building and the value of that area is going to be too high for the apartments to stay what they were.

With all of these parcels being sold and developed in the Granary District, the Fleet Block is beginning to stick out as a blighted waste of space on Central 9th. I know the BLM murals are complicating the project but does anyone know what the current timeline is for the city to redevelop the block? Are we really still waiting for the city council to rezone it?

Also, I found a webpage that I hadn't seen before that shows a vision for the Fleet Block and Granary District. Were you part of this at one point, Orlando?

https://www.ankrommoisan.com/projects/fleet-block-granary-district/
Quote:
Like many U.S. cities contending with urban sprawl, Salt Lake City needs more transit-connected housing to attract new businesses and young professionals. Salt Lake City’s Granary District—an old warehouse district that’s been sitting mostly vacant for 86 years—is already well-connected with transit, close to downtown, and primed for both preservation and innovation. Here, where the Fleet Block was historically used for the city’s maintenance fleet storage, sits the perfect location for our new community.

Within biking and walking distance of downtown and accessible by light rail, our Fleet Block Redevelopment Framework will, catalyze SLC’s growth with a thriving new community and high-tech research hub. At 120 acres, mixing housing, business, and amenities, this is the largest urban plan Ankrom Moisan has ever done.
There's lots more text and renderings on the page, including one with a very similar view to the image posted in Blah_Amazing's post:

Yep. A lot of that was me. Though, now 2 (including me) of the 3 main designers on that are working elsewhere. I'm actually involved in a couple granary projects right now.

Good to hear! Those immediate surrounding blocks in all directions have some great historical structures mixed in with what will continue to be some large and impressive developments over the next ten years. One of my favorites will always be the old Crane building.

One of the flyers for the Granary District property had this info on the Fleet Block. Is this just the old plan for the area? It doesn't mention anything about the murals so I am assuming its the old plan.

It was from a document advertising the site for sale from Cushman & Wakefield.

I actually found it from a google search. Here is the link to the document through google: https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=http...iy7NrDoNnxAhVL0KwKHXsfAKUQr4kDegUIARDQAQ

Let me know if it works or not.

Unfortunately, the Cushman & Wakefield advertisement for the property doesn't have the same document linked, just a two page flyer.

Anyway, I still suspect the images are from the old plan prior to 2020. Obviously that may still be implemented, but it will likely be changed. I personally would like to see it change at least at little bit from the renderings, since they include surface parking and I absolutely hate surface parking.

I would love to have seen something similar to designs Atlas posted a link to. Unfortunately, the area is being developed more piecemeal.

This makes me hope that something like those designs are what we can hope for on the Rocky Mountain Power site when that happens.

While the City Council continues to consider rezoning for the area, in 2021 the City will release a Request for Information to engage the community in imagining the possibilities for transitioning the Fleet Block into a community asset with gathering space, green space, and access to opportunity, including living-wage jobs and affordable housing.

Not sure of any case where people who tag a building get to determine the disposition of the property. If you paint a building that is slated for demolition you should expect that your creation will have a limited life. And however creative the result is, I'm not sure there is broad support in SLC for a national monument to people who have been killed by the police.

Public Art In Salt Lake City Airport Competing For International Award
https://www.upr.org/post/public-art-salt-lake-city-airport-competing-international-award

Quote:
In the main terminal of the newly remodeled Salt Lake City airport, artist Gordon Huether worked to bring the outdoors inside by creating a piece that mimicked Utah’s canyon scenery with white waves and ridges that integrate with the architecture of the airport. Multi-colored lights illuminate the monochrome structure of the Canyon installation in an effort to reflect the style of the earth’s geologic sediments.

Huether’s work is now competing for the prestigious CODA award for best integration of art with public space.

“People wanted to see the beauty of Utah reflected in the airport. It’s really been an honor to have that work recognized on an international basis,” said Nancy Volmer, the Director of Communication and Marketing at SLC International Airport.

CODA award contestants compete in ten different categories ranging from commercial, transportation, to educational. Volmer said the Canyon brings attention not only to Utah’s burgeoning international travel hub, but also to a growing emphasis on advancing national infrastructure in a way that goes beyond the merely practical.

“I think it’s really unique for an airport to have such a comprehensive art installation,” she said.

“Some of the feedback that we’ve been getting from our passengers is that the airport is beautiful.”

Public voting for the award is closed and jurors will now deliberate between the most voted entries for this year. The winners will be announced in late August.

North unit will be a Cidery called Scion. It's going to be realy cool. Perfect for the hood. South unit is uncommitted. The res units on top are probably the nicest income restricted units in the city. Also, 9th S.
streetscape improvements have started construction. Huge disruption of business after a global pandemic but the end results will be excellent.
