I just wish we would have become a more progressive and equitable society when it comes to helping those down on their luck that are experiencing homelessness.

Sure, and the best way many studies suggest we can help reduce homelessness is to build more housing for people with limited finances. With so many of the homeless coming from an indigenous background, supporting organizations like Lu’ma Native Housing Society should help. This also creates housing outside the DTES, with 24/7 staffing, and support services which the article says includes "daily meals, Indigenous cultural programming, skills building, and connections to volunteer or employment opportunities Additionally, healthcare supports by Vancouver Coastal Health will be available to residents, such as on-site or in-reach care, and access to referral health services".

Many studies show housing people first, and then providing support to help them deal with the problems that got them into homelessness, is cheaper for society, and more effective than providing more expensive services like hospital care whenever a health crisis occurs. We're playing catch-up for many years of not providing housing at the lowest level of affordability, and some municipalities have been very reluctant to acknowledge the need, or be willing to do anything about it.

The current BC Government seem to be supporting or directly building more housing like this than for many years. In Burnaby there are several new non-market projects for nearly 1,000 units. That's something that wasn't seen in the Corrigan years. The projects include buildings that will be managed by the Vancouver Native Housing Society, and will have units for both indigenous and non-native residents. That's also true of several of the Vancouver buildings managed by indigenous housing organizations - there are a variety of models being adopted, but acknowledging that there are many more indigenous homeless than their proportion of the overall population should suggest. (Edit - I put the Burnaby example in here because I know you live there - not to divert the General Vancouver thread!)

This shows the same simple thinking behind "white lives matter.' It is akin to ending black slavery in the US and immediately claiming the problem should be over . . . essentially: you are free, you are on your own, now succeed! It is the naive response of those who could never get their heads around affirmative action programs.

We are far from an equitable society. Part of getting there is understanding and taking action to directly address people and issues still suffering from past wrongs. Equality is made, not simply specified with our words. We might be getting better, but we have plenty left to do.

Just gonna play devil's advocate and point out the dangers of sliding from "equal opportunity" to "equal outcome." A few of the aforementioned programs (not this one) reek of special treatment.

"equal outcome" seems to be a big theme in BC these days with the NDP calling the shots.

Hasting & Jackson

Looks like the Orcas are attacking the heritage house.

Given the choice between that and the Libs' preferred "unequal outcome," I'll take what we've got.

This forum has more than enough actual devils posting here. There's no need for anyone playing advocate.

I guess they wanted to stay - or one did, which would be enough. There's currently a vacant site that wraps round the duplex, and a 3 storey sausage factory that's been vacant for a while, and was sold last year. The Orwell Hotel to the west remains.

These two choices create an oversimplification that only confuses things. "Opportunity" without the means to utilize it is no opportunity at all. Outcomes are the measure of opportunities that work in the real world.

Assuming of course that some homeless have "more" opportunities than others. It's possible to recognize that the FN are especially at-risk, AND hope that everybody else down on their luck gets a chance too.

does anyone know the scoop on the 2 London Drugs "projects" in Vancouver?

1) the 4th and MacDonald project mentioned 2 years ago >> https://www.urbanyvr.com/london-drugs-slated-for-west-4th-and-macdonald-in-kitsilano/

(the retail space beside the old gas station lot has not been leased and has been empty for a while and the rental building that will be raised I am told is not renting to anyone new.)

2) the East Hastings store replacement >> https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/2585-east-hastings-street-vancouver-london-drugs

with the economy headed for a dig rebound you would think they would be pushing ahead with them? I say they as I am assuming they are both LD Family projects ... but maybe its just the 1 on East Hastings that is. anyone know whats up with these 2?

Here's the anticipated office tower for Hemlock and West Broadway, replacing the Mercedes / Jim Pattison garage. 300 feet, 300,000 square feet. More here [changing city blog] more detail here in the application.

Very nice, thanks!

Reminds me of 601 West Hastings.

From the application report:

Anticipated? This is the first time I've heard of this large project for West Broadway.

The Broadway/Granville area has a more downtown feel than does Cambie and Broadway. Already 2 major office towers in the works for Granville and Broadway.

Golly gee I wish they would get more creative with the glazing.

Huanheng bought the site for an office tower some years ago, but Pattison needed a temporary location while they redeveloped their Burrard location. Assuming they move forward quickly once its rezoned, it could complete around the same time that SkyTrain opens.

And good riddance to the garage. That entire area needs a boost in foot traffic.
