Or this assumes the tradesperson is living and parking in Vancouver with a new 2023 gas-only vehicle, paying the max $83 a month (written off as a company expense) matters at all for 7 years (to condo sellers), if they keep that gas-only car that whole time.

Then it becomes redundant after 2030.
Wow, so glad everyone in Vancouver lives in a new building.

How many tradespeople live in Vancouver these days?

It's not the issue you're trying to suggest it is. There's no free parking in the West End, for example.

Is the issue a tradesperson possibly paying:

- $85.00 a month to have a 2023 or newer gas-only company vehicle; or
- $3.75 a month to parking their company car on the street at their home overnight?

Nothing else changes with these permits.

What's perplexing to me is why the business community is not pushing back on City Council on these outlandish ideas. Surely there's some saner heads which fund the campaigns or outright bribe these politicians. What is going on here? Are the puppet masters drinking the Kool Aid as well?

Maybe because as the post above states, it's not a big deal.

If anything, business wants parking available near them. If it's free, it won't be available.

Businesses also want customers. The virtue signalling bureaucrats at city hall don't realize they are slitting downtown Vancouver's throat.

That argument has been made since the first Burrard Bridge bike lane. Yet here we are.

Vancouver has had parking meters for something like 75 years.

You mean you can currently park for free downtown?

It's been the whole tone of council and their urban planners for years. People from the 'burbs are given the message they're not welcome in the city. Pay to visit granny in her Killarney home. Don't even think about visiting Stanley park unless you're biking there etc etc.

Why would someone from say Burnaby or Surrey have to pay for parking to visit their grandma during the day on a residential street in Killarney under this parking policy?

There is finite parking in Stanley Park and turnover (like a shopping street) is key to increase the number of people that can use a stall per day. I'm not aware of permanent parking reductions at Stanley Park in the last few years. I'm in the Park every day and the parking lots all seem well used and open.

None of what you're saying has any basis in fact.

Back in the day I remember the first Park-In Day we held in Edmonton. You pull up. Plug the meter with coins. Set up what ever you want, but no car. People lost their mind.

One year away.
The 2023 models will start selling in 2022.
If this goes ahead, there'll be a run on gas vehicles in 2022.

********

The bigger concern is not the residential on-street parking fee - it's the disguised VEHICLE LEVY.
$500/yr for 2023 or newer gas cars
$1000/yr for 2023 of newer gas luxury cars, SUVs and trucks.

Agreed some that buy a new gas-only vehicle starting in 2023 will have to pay about $85/mth, and anyway most manufactures won't be selling them by 2030-35 and they are banned (at the moment) in Canada by 2040.

So if you buy an SUV in 2023, own it till maybe 2030, buy a new hybrid or EV one, you might have paid $7k or $12k (it'll likely increase before 2030).

Or, you could buy an SUV hybrid in 2023 for $10k more, then get a $4k rebate, save on gas (what's it at 1.50 now?), and save yourself the $7k or $12k levy.

In 2018, EVs made up 4% of total light cars in BC.
In 2020 I think it was around 11%?

yes, pay more for an expensive car, to save a made up tax grab. in the end, you still pay more because of a tax grab. this at the same time that in 2020 city managers/upper level averaged a 4.8% wage increase and this year i hear will be around the same.

Yes, make driving less convenient and more expensive. That is the only way to get people out of their cars and get them walking, biking, and riding public transit.

If you choose not to live where you work / where your kids go to school / near public transit and your family chooses to own one, two, three, or more vehicles when other viable alternatives exist, then pay up!
