I went through today and it is bright, but really? Some of you are awfully sensitive. Why so bright though? I can't see the benefit.

I've been through brighter. I used to use the Queens Midtown Tunnel in New York, both before and after its complete renovation. With its new (or were they just cleaned?) white porcelain tiles and lighting, it was like entering a white light sabre . . . and exiting into midtown was when you needed to take the sunglasses off. It too was easy to get used to. I think our tunnel will be just fine.

Good god they still want to push through with city-wide parking fees for residents and visitors.

Lunatic idiots run the City Hall. This is also something that I haven't seen being mentioned on the crusade against cars:

Quote:
Staff is also recommending the city implement a “pollution charge” between $500 and $1,000 a year for owners of gas-powered vehicles, including trucks, large SUVs and luxury cars, bought beginning in 2023.
Vancouver already dipped to 16th place on the World's Most Livable Cities ranking and will keep coming down many more places.

It'll just reduce people's discretionary income - so less to spend at all those restaurants going bust.

"Make sure you stop the derelicts from parking overnight on the road in their RVs and vans, but make sure you don't enforce those same rules on me!"

- People that don't understand rules

Please stop and think about policies like this. There are a lot of areas of the city that already have this exact system in place, ever see the "No parking without permit" signs? People should like these policies in those areas because it means they have a place to park.

Oh, they will come after you next, guaranteed.

Gas taxes carry so much of the government everywhere in the world that once the cash grab dries up, electric cars are guaranteed to be taxed just as heavily under some climate pretense. The only difference is that cost of all electricity will have skyrocketed as consumption has multiplied and protesters continue to block any new power plants from being built. It's a dystopian future that we are all heading for and some are clapping.

Benefits such as using HOV lanes and charging your car for free at certain places are just a temporary things and sure to be gone in few years. Private car ownership will always be taxed heavily, regardless of what they run on.

Oh, it's going to be a two-tier system based on how vulnerable you are. How else!

Coun. Christine Boyle said in an email that she didn’t anticipate the program would impact people living in their vehicles, which is evident in areas around Strathcona Park, along the Terminal Avenue corridor and near Lowe’s home improvement store off Renfrew Street.

“When residents have no other option but to live in a vehicle, our approach needs to be helping connect them to services and find stable housing, rather than further penalizing them,” said Boyle, noting the needs of low-income people and residents with mobility challenges are priorities for her when implementing any plan.

Are not most auto manufactures not making gas cars beyond 2030 anyway. Most now are hybrids too, no? So barely anyone is going to pay that fee.

Also... who the hell is buying a pure gas powered SUV in 2023!? And $45 a year parking pass is $3.75 a month... which is like... the price of a hot dog at a Canadians game.

You realize 2023 is only two years away, right? And of course this will just drive up the cost of housing even further as pick-up and van driving trades pass on the ecoweenie charge to their clients.

Yes the often stated "everyone goes EV and the gas tax revenue dries up" problem. Seems like it'll happen, but currently moving at quite a slow pace in BC with 9 out of 10 vehicles sold still being gas-only (not even hybrid).

And even slower if you look at the percentage of the total fleet where EV's make up less than 2% of the total. Source: April 2021 CBC article "Over 54,000 light-duty EVs now registered in B.C., annual report says" link

If crafted in the right way and there was a voter split on the centre and left, I wouldn't be surprised if a mayor got elected on saving a few people $3.75 a month as the biggest single issue in 2022.

This hasn't been approved by Council yet, and they will no doubt hear from the the public - or some of them, before they decide whether to approve it. The idea comes directly from the Climate Emergency Action Plan, which was unanimously approved by Council in 2019. So none of the existing Council members thought it was a terrible idea then. Unless we get a majority of climate change denying members on a new Council, it's likely that ideas like this are going to continue to come forward for consideration.

Why would a condo's price go up (to an amount that anyone bats an eye at)... if a tradesperson drives a 2023 or newer gas car and might pay (in the areas that don't currently have parking restrictions). We increase our price per square foot mainly based on construction and land costs, and what the market can handle... and new buildings provide free on-site parking for delivery / service vehicles.

Or this assumes the tradesperson is living and parking in Vancouver with a new 2023 gas-only vehicle, paying the max $83 a month (written off as a company expense) matters at all for 7 years (to condo sellers), if they keep that gas-only car that whole time.

Then it becomes redundant after 2030.

Many here believe that the City Hall wackos would just leave it at $45. Oh no, that's just Step 1 on a road to hiking it towards what parking permits cost in West End in the name of equity.
