^ Beautiful!

And that view is going to look even better once the Cogswell interchange is redone.

The most disappointing aspect of Rogers. If we're going to have an extortive telecom company that screws us all over on mobile/internet service, the least they could do is build a sweet office tower.

Rogers picked up the building and site for cheap. They expanded it with a north and south wing that are complimentary in design but screwed up the overall massing.

It's ridiculous how much we pay for internet but, they aren't gouging us either. Service coverage in Toronto is cheap which is why you have they cheap local providers. It's very expensive for the national carriers

Rogers certainly is included in taking advantage of the pandemic situation in laying off staff and now hiring to fill those positions back at 2/3rds wages. Lot of that falls on the ineptitude of the federal government. They were also part of Trudeau's secret conference in putting a moratorium on hiring white people.

Or, with reference to something you and I snarkily said about Toronto a while ago, a bargain basement 5th Avenue.

Technically a residential "suburb" of the CBD but almost entirely comprised of mid to highrise apartment buildings built during a series of property booms from the 50s to the 70s. Used to be the main expat centre / party area for young people in SA, was the victim of white flight and is now the magnet for immigrants and job seekers in the country. Has a reputation that is at least somewhat deserved, but is quite the interesting area despite everything.

COVID has been tough apparently but still lots of potential. If they ever start building new glass condos in the area I can see the comparison - in terms of recent highrises the only ones have been two student housing buildings in the past 2 years.

Some pics I took 2 years ago:

The big thing that stands out to me is how filled in the Gottingen area looks. And most of the empty lots visible are sites with planned developments. Years ago you might have said it had "good bones" but I think it's close to just being good now.

Hillbrow looks fascinating. A tinsy bit threatening maybe (or it is maybe just the stories that I have heard) but very fascinating nonetheless. I would enjoy a tour, but with a trusty local to show me the way. I enjoyed my tours of Lima (Peru) that took me outside of the ritzy tourist districts, to see how most people lived. I am a total wanderer when it comes to checking out new cities.

It's definitely an interesting area well worth visiting if you ever have the chance! You could probably walk it alone, but not really recommended unless you know the area already - there are certain buildings you don't want to stop and stare at too long lest someone wonder why you are there. We did a tour based out of Ponte Tower (https://www.dlalanje.org/) which is fascinating as you get to view the penthouse suite as well as a walking tour of the area - the group funnels most of the money back into the community (funds a daycare and after school programs for kids mostly) which is great. Interestingly enough, a significant percentage of their customers are Joburg residents who just haven't been downtown in years.

Also been through with a landlord including a site visit (fascinating) and just with a friend who co-owns a tour company elsewhere downtown before grabbing drinks. You can drive through with no problem too, despite the stories. Smash and grabs are actually more common in wealthy areas.

I am haunted by the image of that tower with the hollow core in the middle where people threw garbage down until the pile became 5-10 storeys tall.
