Can you provide some detail on Sohi screwed Edmonton? I'd like to be better informed on the candidates.

Many folks may remember, Mr. Sohi took a leave of absence to run as a Liberal MP, while remaining as a City Councilor. When he won, he took a $46,000 severance pay from the taxpayers of Edmonton, on his way to Ottawa. Then he lost his seat with the liberals....Now he wants to be Mayor lmao.

Abandonment AND poor decisions, no matter how you slice it, this guy is desperate for a free ride... I'm hoping the citizens of the City of Edmonton see through this lazy mans charade.

Kinda sorta*.

He took a leave, ran, won and then as per his contract and every municipal elected official contract in Edmonton he received a 'transitionary' payment as he left that role. Typically this is to permit elected officials to transition back into the private sector.

He did lose his seat, but didn't rush back into this and worked in the private sector the last few years in an advisory role.

In my mind this is a logical next step for his career and one that is backed by his various experiences thus far.

Do I think that he was put into a role in Ottawa that was his head, yes. Do I think that he was a bit of the fall guy for Trudeau's failings for defending the West and Oil, absolutely.

But he is far from lazy and very much a wonderful man to chat with about a huge swath of subjects and would be a very good representative of our city.

Nickel can be a fiscal hawk all he wants by continuing to vote 'No' for almost every Council decision. However, as he is terrible at building consensus he would never follow through on his agenda if he were to become Mayor, as he would need to have the majority of Council vote alongside him.

Anywhere I've seen have Mike Nickel far behind - maybe challenging the likes of Brian Gregg.

Not scientific obviously but Edify magazine had a poll online (https://edifyedmonton.com/urban/community/sohi-enters-race-as-the-provisional-favourite-poll/)

36% - Sohi
30% - Krushell
13% - Watson
11% - Steele
5% - Nickel
3% - Oshry
3% - Others

I'm guessing this race will end up being Krushell vs Sohi, with Watson and Oshry not far behind.

Me as well. I wonder if there’s a possibility of a vote split between her, Sohi and Oshry which allows Nickel to run up the middle. I certainly hope not. Nickel’s brand is crusty contrarian, which is barely tolerable as a councillor let alone mayor.

Having Sohi, who was an excellent Councillor, Federal MP and Cabinet Minister as Mayor would really help Edmonton at the Federal level particularly with the current Liberal Government. And the polls show the Liberals leading in projected seat counts were an election called today - consistent with they have shown since the last election. Being a pragmatic person - I would rather Edmonton work effectively with the powers in office than be on the sidelines.

Agreed on all fronts, especially since the Feds have provided more dollars lately for projects than the Province.

I would have to agree.

Trudeau , unfortunately , is not going anywhere and will be reelected hence Sohi may have some leverage with the Feds. Any other scenario and I would not vote for him

I do like Kim Krushell though - I think she was a solid councilor and would be my second choice.

Sohi was good for Edmonton in his various political roles. He lost his federal riding because of resentment towards the liberals. He still is a popular figure. I'll take a wait and see on whether I would vote for him. We need someone who drives the bus (no bun intended as Sohi was a former driver) who is more fiscal leaning and less downtown bike lanes then Iverson but not a lack of vision guy like Nichol.

Nichol is a BIG mouth, short on brains and ZERO social skills. Nichol comes as an in your face loud mouth aka Trump. Don't get snookered by him.

Cheryll Watson wants to prioritize and accelerate the Capital LRT line expansion to the Edmonton International Airport, and advocate in support of a privately developed high speed transportation system between Edmonton and Calgary. Sohi may come across as inclusive, but she is promoting a bigger picture if you ask me.

i suppose in some respects it might be a matter of opinion but, in my opinion anyway, while i might be prepared to support things like the capital line expansion, although probably none of the current high speed transportation pipe dreams between edmonton and calgary, i’m becoming more and more convinced that if we don’t have an inclusive and safe society for everyone that’s a member of that society, our society will remain broken even if some of the new shiny objects work better than the old ones.

there is nothing bigger picture than inclusion when you truly think about what accepting exclusion means and leads to.

and yes, maybe i am being even crankier than usual but that’s because i’m becoming angrier than usual and tired of being lied to and being expected to believe the lies.

If what Hallsy says is true, Cheryll Watson is someone to NOT vote for due to having a lack of knowledge on how the city of Edmonton works.
