If it is a choice between Elks and Eagles, I would argue Eagles has more meaning. Eagles are very common to Edmonton. But more importantly, the Eagle is highly revered and has significant meaning to the peoples that have lived here for thousands of years. The Eagle, specifically the Golden and Bald Eagles are revered and sacred among their traditions, culture, and religion. It represents honesty, truth, strength, courage, wisdom, power, and freedom.
Yes, I agree with who cares what John Oliver thinks. But, if you remove the former name for something else, a John Oliver test might tease out why a nickname might not be a good idea. Elks isn't terrible, and I really do like the logo. At the moment, the name has no meaning other than an animal that I have to watch for at dusk when I drive through JNP. Over time, I hope it will come to have meaning - just as the former nickname did. I appreciate your comments ExcaliburKid
I liked the idea of the Eagles for a team name as well, but when it comes down to it, it's just a nickname. I get that there are folks out there who are going to pick the name apart no matter what, because you can't please everyone. I'm just glad they finally have this figured out so the fans of the team can move on to hopefully enjoying CFL football again this year.

I really hope the name grows on fans, new and existing. I think keeping the EE was important for the older generation to still feel connected to the new team name, which I would include myself in. It's iconic and I'm glad they kept that aspect.

Go Elks

I am all in with the new Elks name for the Edmonton Football Club. I imagine Cabela's will be sold out of elk horns soon.

I was hoping they could be bold and do something to celebrate indigenous peoples. Which is why I liked the Eagles nickname. Certainly that is not bold, but changing the name Edmonton to its Cree name: Amiskwacîwâskahikan Eagles - would be bold. And would be awesome in my opinion. The club could have made a name for itself (pun intended) as the first professional sports team to do such a thing, which in turn could boost the league and team's profile, and would show that the club genuinely is breaking from the current paradigm. But yeah nah. Let's not piss off the old white guys. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks

"Well...I was hoping they could be bold and do something to celebrate indigenous peoples"

They actually had this already for the Inuit people.

The term "Eskimo" is commonly used to describe Inuit and the Siberian and Alaskan Yupik, Iñupiat, and Chukchi peoples. "Inuit" is generally not accepted as a term for the Yupik and Chukchi, and "Eskimo" is often used as the term that applies across the Yupik, Chukchi, Iñupiat, and Inuit peoples.

This was never a slur...this name change was from a very small % of people wanting to be perpetual victims and having their little feelings hurt being over woke and sensitive.

The Edmonton Elks...lol.

Similar scenarios for sure. lol

As for the Elks we will have to accept the name now, like it or lump it. Maybe they will have big screens for communities to watch games at the Elks clubs across the area.

I agree - the name is here and is not going away. So now that the name is changed and for the people who have no issues with the new one - support the team - buy season tickets and mechandise. Fill the stadium. get your antler hats. Cheer them on.

The people who don't like the name Elks will also buy tickets and support the Edmonton Football Club if they love football and our great city. Of course there always are the whiners who bitch about everything and you hope you don't sit next to one in the stands.

Away from Elks topic. I just found out today that Habs goaltender Carey Price is a rodeo cowboy during the summer. I guess he grew up cowboyish west of Williams Lake and even in Montreal he listens to country music etc. He does b.c. rodeo circuit and is a team roper, and a good one. Been around horses all his life and dresses cowboy, hat and all. An actual professional rodeo cowboy. This amazes me. Shouldnt he be playing in Calgary or Dallas Texas ? Me being raised in rural Alberta I’m now a fan. Explains his cool quiet style. https://www.google.ca/search?q=carey+pri...TGYAQCgAQGwARg&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-hp

Back to Elks. One thing that really fits, looking at any map, adjacent to Metro Edmonton is a big green area that says Elk Island National Park.

She's looking good. I'm not much of a baseball fan...but I will go and watch once in awhile and enjoy some dogs and munchies. I will definitely go if they have the Symphony there.

Nice ball park - now need to get Rossdale going and create some sort of entertainment critical mass there. Maybe use the cable car to connect the site to Old Strathcona. Asking a lot for this city but a start.

The gondola at EPCOR site is not convenient for anyone other than folks that live south of 97 Ave. It will be the least used station until (1) redevelopment of the power plant site occurs and even then only on weekends and (2) development of substantial residential is built on the surrounding lands.
