I blame Ottawa, not Victoria - $10 billion to Ontario and Quebec for every $1 billion to BC, and then they waste it on garbage like this.

it is as shovel ready as the Hamilton project is .... is what I am saying .... if not more so as well its not "officially canceled" like the other one.

so where I come from a project that is CANCELLED yet magically SHOVEL READY THE NEXT DAY

is as SHOVEL READY as a project that is NOT CANCELLED AND CURRENTLY IN PLANNING STAGES. call me crazy. call me a loonie.

Again, Ontario's table scraps take priority. Unless you think Wilkinson would've fought tooth and nail for (gasp) public transit to an orange riding?

Once again just for the record the detailed design of the entire 16km of the Langley extension is being completed simultaneously, the reason for this is because Translink desires the project to be built in a single phase because doing so was found to be the best business case scenario.

So, in other words, “phase two” of this project is just as shovel ready as “phase one.”

I really don’t know a project that could be more shovel ready. Far lass shovel ready projects across Canada are taking advantage of the Federal stimulus money allotted for public transit. This isn’t the fault of the feds but the fault of the provincial government for being so apathetic towards major transportation infrastructure if this project does indeed fail to move forward as a single phase.

Wonder when this one will finally break ground. Was originally supposed to be complete out to Fleetwood in late 2025 if I recall correctly. Seems pretty doubtful that target gets reached at this point in time.

‘We’re just waiting’: Federal cash still needed to finish SkyTrain to Langley
https://globalnews.ca/news/7915931/federal-cash-completion-skytrain-langley/amp/

Quote:
With British Columbia looking ahead to a post-pandemic world, the mayor of the City of Langley says it’s time to move forward full steam with with the planned SkyTrain extension to her community.

Current funding for the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain expansion will only take the line six stops from King George Station to 166th Street in Surrey’s Fleetwood neighbourhood.

Val van den Broek said the final piece of the puzzle to get the trains out to 203 Street in her city is a funding commitment from the federal government.

“We’re just waiting,” she said.

“I think they were supposed to be (ready) by end of June, I don’t know. COVID has really changed things for everyone and that’s the reality, so we’ve just had to have a little bit more patience with it.”

The B.C. government indicated its financial commitment to the project in its April budget.
Interesting bit near the end of the article.
Quote:
Meanwhile, Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun told Global News he has had discussions with Premier John Horgan about the possibility of light rapid transit from Langley once the SkyTrain project is complete.

“I think the natural from there is up Fraser Highway, we have to make a few detours because of the steep grade east of Langley Airport and then to get it to Mt. Lehman Road and I’m not sure from there,” he said.

“I’d like to see something in ten years.”

Braun says he’s also had preliminary discussions with Langley Township mayor Jack Froese.

LRT to the Fraser Valley, he said, would alleviate traffic congestion on Highway 1.

Going to take a guess that the NDP drag their feet on funding this (only pledging $376 million thus far) until the election campaign in 2024, at which point the federal liberals will have allocated funds elsewhere resulting in this project being in limbo. In typical BC fashion, we will see a partial line built out to Fleetwood for the same cost of what the entire line to Langley would have costed, and the Langley extension taking another decade to sort out.

Are you trying to make some half-arsed political point, or did you not read the post above? The Province ( that's the NDP controlled Province) committed to fund their share of the route to Langley in the April budget. The Federal Government (that's the Federal Liberal controlled government) haven't committed to fund anything except the first phase to Fleetwood.

Well it’s good news if after all the NDP are still committed to full buildout ASAP, though PR wise it would be a good idea to remind the public about that more directly which would also help hold the fed’s feet to the fire.

Does that mean they're missing about $1.5 B of federal money?

Translink has to fund a real study to plan it in detail before either level of government will commit money. That hasn't been done, but should be ASAP.

Especially because the only thing keeping JT alive is the fear of a Conservative win.

Feds chip in 25-30%, so for $3.1b that's $930 million?

That was already done in the business case, which found that the Benefit-Cost Ratio was better for the full extension to Langley (1.24) that for the parial line to Fleetwood (1.12).

Yeah I don’t know where this myth that a real study hasn’t been done is coming from? Especially since the entire extension is currently in the detailed design phase

Detailed design is what they need to fund it.

I agree it appears to be a "no brainer", but government needs a specific well detailed budget to start with.

I was surprised to see nothing in the latest NDP budget, but was told that the plans were detailed enough to fund, or even promise a match to whatever the Feds would do.

Trudeau and Horgan expected to confirm Surrey-Langley SkyTrain funding on Friday
Kenneth Chan

Jul 8 2021, 9:09 pm

Justin Trudeau will make a stop at Surrey City Hall on Friday morning for a “public transit announcement.”

According to the itinerary by the Prime Minister’s Office, released late today, Trudeau will be joined by federal Minister of Infrastructure Catherine McKenna, BC Premier John Horgan, BC Minister of Transportation Rob Fleming, BC Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy George Heyman, Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum, Langley City Mayor Val van den Broke, and TransLink Interim CEO Gigi Chen-Kuo.

All signs point to this being the long-anticipated project confirmation and funding announcement for the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension, but it will be against the backdrop of a much-speculated federal election this fall.

Gonna be real upset if JT's only sending the money after the election (i.e. Liberal defeat = no SkyTrain).
