Elk, Eagles, Elkhounds, Evergreens, Evergolds, Eclipse, and Elements

Elk or Evergolds for me

Mar/21
According to information obtained by Greg McCulloch of Piffles Podcast, Edmonton quietly filed trademarks for two more potential monikers on March 1: Edmonton Energy and Edmonton Elks.

I like it!

The logo is way better than I thought it would turn out.

I'm just ready for CFL football to be back already.

I really didn't like the idea of using the name Elks for the following reasons:
One Elk is an Elk, two Elk is not Elks.
"The Elks" is an old white guy's secret society: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benevolent_and_Protective_Order_of_Elks that refused to any person other than white males of sound mind and body...
I was hoping they could be bold and do something to celebrate indigenous peoples. Which is why I liked the Eagles nickname. Certainly that is not bold, but changing the name Edmonton to its Cree name: Amiskwacîwâskahikan Eagles - would be bold. And would be awesome in my opinion. The club could have made a name for itself (pun intended) as the first professional sports team to do such a thing, which in turn could boost the league and team's profile, and would show that the club genuinely is breaking from the current paradigm. But yeah nah. Let's not piss off the old white guys. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks

I like the new name - best of the options provided for sure. The new branding is top notch.

"The Native Americans called elk “wapiti”, which means “light-colored deer.” This comes from the word “waapiti” meaning “white rump.”

"However, Early European explorers thought that the elk resembled a moose. In Europe, a common name for a moose was an elk, so it basically got misnamed by the explorers in this context."

some will say that elk should be treated in the same manner as most other wild ruminants where the singular and the plural are the same (bison, caribou, deer, moose, sheep) and that expressing the plural as elks, which is much less common and harder to say, continues the misnaming tradition...

it is, however, hard not to think it's still better than ottawa's precedent that would have given us the "greengolds". or the "goldgreens". go elks go!

Well, this is a discussion forum. If the only criteria was to be safe, Eagles would have been a better choice. My point was if the club wanted to right a wrong, they had a great opportunity to do something bold and make a statement. I do think Elks is maybe an easy target. The Board of Directors should have applied the "John Oliver Test". What would John Oliver say on Last Week Tonight? "..... changing the team name from Eskimos to The Elks, a historically racist, all male fraternal order. Yeah, that's much better".

Doing something bold and making a statement is the last thing we see in Edmonton.

Bold for one means not hanging on to the EE - start fresh.

Hands are tied before you even start.

Ok Jasper 109, however, the logo suggests otherwise. It's a picture of an Elk. A wild animal. Why is this an easy target? How is it in any way related to the Elks order and why do people find the need to make that distinction?

Why do we need to be "safe" with every aspect of our lives? The name change is appropriate and good on the organization for doing so, but FFS, can we just live our lives without being offended by anything anybody or any organization does? It's just exhausting and this world has turned in to a damned if you do and damned if you don't reality.

Who cares what John Oliver thinks? Should we base everything on his mantra? Sounds like he has a great formula for getting weak minded simps up in a mad scramble to "cancel" anything that might be construed as offensive.

It's one thing to think the name is unfitting because you liked the sound of Eagles better, but to go the extra mile to connect the new name "Elks" to an "Old white guys secret society"...that's my problem with your post

The sad thing is, I'm sure you aren't the only one

The Eagles name is EVERYWHERE.

Elks is unique and as ExacliburKid said, it's based on the animal, not a bunch of old white men.

This sounds like grasping at something that isn't there to really bash.

I can't argue with anything you said. It all comes down to meaning. The former name was not considered acceptable because of what it means to a segment of Canada's population. Again, my point was simply they could have done something bold that has significant meaning tied to Edmonton's genius loci. If it is a choice between Elks and Eagles, I would argue Eagles has more meaning. Eagles are very common to Edmonton. But more importantly, the Eagle is highly revered and has significant meaning to the peoples that have lived here for thousands of years. The Eagle, specifically the Golden and Bald Eagles are revered and sacred among their traditions, culture, and religion. It represents honesty, truth, strength, courage, wisdom, power, and freedom.
Yes, I agree with who cares what John Oliver thinks. But, if you remove the former name for something else, a John Oliver test might tease out why a nickname might not be a good idea. Elks isn't terrible, and I really do like the logo. At the moment, the name has no meaning other than an animal that I have to watch for at dusk when I drive through JNP. Over time, I hope it will come to have meaning - just as the former nickname did. I appreciate your comments ExcaliburKid

i'd be happy to the jets move on but also okay with a habs win.

as for toronto, leafs fans will need to be a lot more patient than their pundits. the israelites spent 430 years in egypt before moses took another 40 years to lead them home. by my calculation, that means that toronto should be able to plan for a parade 416 years from now after they next win the stanley cup in 2437.
