I think some First Nations art would have looked better here. I don't know what this is trying to be.

They couldn't, because they wouldn't even be able to build back the same amount of units, if any at all due to zoning.

Because Vancouver.

I think it is trying to be, among other things, Politically Correct. It looks a bit like First Nations art .... but not enough so to be recognizable as such ... a bit perhaps Aztec ... but no, not that ... kids' art class mural? ... well, maybe, but obviously not by kids .... an experiment using basic forms of circles, squares, and triangles .... well, sort of, and we extrapolate that brilliantly ... symbolic of the elements, of life, of ancient rituals and concepts dating back to the pre-dawn of civilization everywhere as we know it??? .... Yes! But only if you want it to be ....Undefinable, non-attributable, pretty, pleasant, nice, colourful, neutral and non-specifically anything at all? Well, yes. Because that's what Politically Correct is. Well, sort of, anyway ......

I find that the repetitious pattern (though each level is different) doesn't make best use of the height of the building. It sort of signals that they have to fill up the space, so pick a new pattern and repeat.
ie compare to the mural on The Charleson (despite the 80s vibe).
Also compare to the iconic rainbow mosaic mural on the Hilton Hawaiian Village at Waikiki.
That said, it could be much worse.

Four tower rezoning proposed for the Granville Loops. Two 40 storey, two 27-storey and 2 12 storey blocks. Some details on Changing City Blog. Rezoning here.

Nice, thanks. Those heights should alleviate some of the pressure for the 2 "gateway" towers to match each other.

'Mediocre Art' is a subjective opinion my friend. But what I was referring to is that grey seems to be the 'go to' colour of choice for this city of Vancouver, and that is my objective opinion. Case in point, the highrise right next to where I reside in the far West End is, at this very moment, being painted grey. Oh, and I know a thing or two about art. Now in my opinion, if I am allowed one here, I would not have chosen something along this line, but tbh, anything with colour and character would have sufficed rather than anything monochromatic. Since this city choses to not build big and progressive, then our small little buildings need to make statements.

Because Vancouver.

From the Vancouver Sun article on the Berkeley Tower:
Quote:
Stovell said it is ironic that the city’s current zoning for the site doesn’t allow for residential — only commercial space. If Reliance had torn down the building, it would not have been allowed to build another high-rise rental tower.

The VS article above also says "the mural proposal has been approved by the city, it is still subject to public comment and a final permit." To me that says they've approved the idea but not the final artwork that will be painted. The renders are an idea of what it could look like - not a decided upon image that everyone will have to accept as is.

I don't know if the rendering on the wall at street level has been changed or not but it seems to be rainbow colours now.

The City was supposed to build a public swimming pool/community centre at the east side (not the former taxi compound). What a betrayal to the local residents. I guess they have decided to sell the land to developers for a huge profit after their disastrous handling of City finances, especially during the pandemic.

Last update on the VAC replacement strategy that I saw was to stick it on the eastside of Sunset Beach.

This lovely old office building (402 West Pender) seems to be getting ready for some renovation.

It's at the corner of Homer and Pender, just north of Salvation Army's Belkin House and just a couple doors east of where the Smile Restaurant was.

Yes, and for the better. They were pondering a 1-for-1 pool replacement at the loops, but deemed it insufficient. Instead opting for 2 or 3 pools with all the rec centre bells and whistles.
