It’s not even nitpicking. People are just talking about what they like and dislike about the design. When you talk about art, design, music or movies etc, you’re gonna have opinions about what you like and dislike, what you think works and doesn’t work and what you wish they did instead. Some people here get so easily triggered for no reason or take it unnecessarily personally.

Many of us like to hear what your opinions are about the new renovation or design and want to know what you think about it. That’s the whole point of a discussion.

It's more a case of wondering what the retrofit required when switching over from an old time movie theater to an apple store.

So has the second level area to the east of the lobby balcony been walled off or not walled off? If so, what does that enclosed space look like...or what will it be used for? everyone should know the answer in a few wks.

another change from the old to the new in dtla....I recall when this was the old hilton statler hotel built in the 1950s. Unlike the tower theater, however, the old hilton didn't deserve to be saved. I never cared for that bldg...always looked outdated to me. I believe there were even a few rooms in it...right up til the day it was torn down...that still had the original 1950s furniture in them....or a format from over 60 yrs ago.

I understand where Scania and Sportsfan are coming from.....Lets be real, we're talking about a company that has single handedly trademarked the Black/White/Gray color scheme and glass cube concept lol. Lets be happy that Tower Theater wasn't turned into a shockingly beautiful rectangular glass box *Sarcasm* with white walls, gray floors with hints of black on the display tables. The blank wall that's causing a fuss will end up being a huge apple logo or LED screen of some kind.

Remember when we got excited a Ross was being put on Broadway and didn't care about what the cost might be to the building........Yeah...... Lets give apple a break hahaha.

I think the interior of the Apple Store is going to be a mess. The renders that were released a few years ago don't inspire confidence.

But I really don't care. They're converting a small, cramped theater into a flagship Apple Store so changes inside are inevitable. I care more about the exterior restoration work (which looks great) and how the project will impact the neighborhood.

Except the Ross buildings isn’t as detailed and ornamented as much as the Tower Theater which was also formerly a movie palace, the Ross building was not. Tower Theater was inspired by the Paris Opera House, the Ross building is just whatever. I think that’s why it details weren’t care for as much as the new Apple store. But whatever... to each their own lol some care for all the details and some really don’t give a 🞵🞵🞵🞵. Fine.

^^^ I see you weren't around for the massive debate/argument of 2014 that was about the Woolworth building (now the Ross building).

The Ross building is older than Tower Theater by 6 years. Built in 1921. It was briefly the SoCal Flagship store for Woolworth Department stores. It was an art deco dream with 2 ornate/detailed grand staircases (not sure if they were saved or not) with an art deco interior that rivaled those of NYC and Chicago and was just as ornate, glamorous and polished as the Tower Theater on the inside. Not many know this since it was gutted years ago and now smells like cheap clothing dye.

The point is, the people of LA has unknowingly lost a lot of gems. You proved that with "The Ross building is just whatever" but not everybody knows the history. My original statement was in regards to the energy in the room back then (DTLA thread of 2013-2014) which was "The extreme gutting of the Woolworth building means a sacrifice for the rest of Broadway later" which in all fairness for the most part worked. ( I only remember all of this because I specifically created my account to chime in on the topic).

Apple removing 2 ornate decorations (we don't know what condition they were in or where they are currently located) isn't a big deal in comparison to other tragedies. We could easily be looking at a gutted Tower Theater that has both sides covered in glass.

Just to clarify, The Tower Theater was not outright inspired by the Paris Opera house. The architect merely copied elements of the interior.

Oh I know what it looked like hahaha and I’ve been following this page for 12 years now.. and no.. the interior was not as ornamented as much as the Tower Theater lol it’s easy to elevate it’s design when you say “rivaled those of NYC and Chicago” when even the interior of those were mediocre.. their buildings itself yes.. great buildings.. but the interior looks like a glorified swap meet ..honestly.. the only thing that was nice was the ornate staircase. So yes.. to me the Ross building is still whatever lol exterior is cute or whateva but to me is not as beautiful as the tower theater. Copied, inspire, copied and paste.. stilled took ideas from Paris Opera house dude lol

Some don't realize how much they tell us about themselves. It would be interesting to see the living rooms of the people on here. My place has been used for photo shoots, amongst other things. I've had an interior decorator...the funny thing is that the people who come over and make statements like, this kind of flower would look better, the paint should be a shade darker, the paint in this room should gloss, and this room should be matte, etc. etc. These idiots couldn't afford a pot to piss in. LOL And when you see where they live, all you can do is just shake our head.

Broadway's retail transformation continues to look more mall like every day. Sketchers just put up a "coming soon" sign next door to the [Michael] Jordan Studio 23 flagship store. I forgot the name of the historic building its going into, but that building is currently under restoration and its' recently revealed facade looks fantastic

This used to be a payless shoes if i remember correctly. Broadway may as well be the "Shoe Corridor" of the city. Sketchers, Vans, Foot action, Shiekh, Nike, WSS, Foot Locker, etc..

^ that & this gives me optimism that dtla will manage to bounce back after 2020...dtla doesn't have many parks, but this is just a block south of city hall, several blocks north of the tower theater...

Pretty much exactly like their renderings, everything scrubbed and painted white. The only surprising part is the painted ceiling dome, not shown in the renderings, and with only gray images available online of what it had originally looked like.

I personally like the bright and airy feel of the off white & gold accents. The more recent colors felt very dark and dingy, not sure if they were original. It didn’t help that the lighting seemed horrendous in the place, but I don’t think it would have helped much. I can’t wait to see the interior in person. Hopefully they open sometime this month. Looks ready, probably just needs a staff & training for this particular space which is probably already underway.
