I get that a cut like that is cheaper than a tunnel, but it still makes me sad to see it.

Tunnel requires ventilation and emergency exits, though, so something like what we’ve just shown is more clean cut.

The Rockies (or Cordillera) are notorious for their instability (i.e. rock slides), so road building is expensive there. On the other hand, it also makes deep cuts like this easy. Canadian Shield on the other hand...

Ps: Just when we think that rock cuts along 11 or twinned portion of 69 are crazy, those are nothing compared to what one sees on Quebec’s A50 and 175.

Not on a highway, but adjacent to Downtown St. John's along South Side Rd. the rock cut for the wastewater treatment plant is pretty impressive.

I always find it interesting that you can't really grow crops on the island of Newfoundland, which reminds me of Canadian Shield, but that the underlying geology of the island isn't Canadian Shield because the rocks are younger.

I am sure if someone tried hard enough, they’d be able to grow crops in Newfoundland. I mean, if they can do it in places in the middle of the Canadian shield like Cochrane, ON, I don’t see why they could not do it there. Unless some local particularities escape me.

A lot of Newfoundland lacks soil depth for much of anything because it's literal rock. In some places you can still see boulders left over from past glacial freezes.

It's the same thing in the highlands in Eastern Ontario* too (well, and most area north of Trent-Severn Waterway, of course). That's why at first I thought it's Canadian Shield in Newfoundland too.
The only patch of farmland that I can find on the island is immediately south of St John's.
* Examples include Hastings Highlands, Addington Highlands, Lanark Highlands - I'm only naming them because you can actually grow stuff in the southern part of these counties.

Is there still a plan to complete the A20 grade separation/bypass at Ile-Perrot or is that just a pipedream? I always end up jogging north to the A40 then south on the Decarie to get to downtown Montreal which seems pointless when there is (or shoud be) a more direct route.

The plan will always be there. (There's a pdf for that somewhere on the internet.) Whether or not it will be completed...

it may be more likely now now that A40 has been shut for days.

Out in the middle of nowhere this weekend. A clip of part of the drive from Fair Haven to Bellevue - hideous 1980s bungalow towns well off the tourist trail. Joined by an at-grade crossing of the four-lane TCH lol

Would love for that to become a reality... As things are right now, the A40 across Ile Aux Tourtes is closed indefinitely for repairs... And the elevated section of A40 near A15 is set to be closed to be demolished, and replaced soon as well, which is going to create some fairly massive headaches for everyone in the area.

If the current closure of A40 is still in place by the Canada Day weekend, I'll most likely have to take the A15 down to A30 and come back up to A20 VIA Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, to avoid that entire hot mess, and get down to Ontario to visit family (that is, if restrictions are lifted by then).

Having this as a freeway link would be awesome, as right now, as it stands currently, the current at-grade intersections on A20 on Ile-Perrot are just a hot mess of traffic lights that cause a lot of headaches, and I, along with plenty of other Montrealers, tend to prefer the currently closed section of A40... The redundancy is much-needed, to say the least.

Lol, in all technicality, I wonder whether we can really say that if the road surface turns out problematic (i.e. not steep enough for drainage) as alleged by MTO.

Yeah... if the grading on the roadway is in fact an issue, as alleged, it's a good thing we're not finding this out when this section of Hwy 427 has been opened. We certainly don't want water pooling on the side of the highway, and posing a hydroplaning hazard to any drivers after all.

Oh yea, in Newfoundland, do you need to come to a full stop before making a left turn? I see those solid white lines at the end of left turn lanes.

If there's a stop sign, we have to stop - but if you're just turning left when the traffic to your right can continue without stopping, you don't have to either. I suspect this isn't what you're talking about and normal everywhere? To be honest, I'm struggling to think of an intersection I know well that isn't controlled by lights

The bridge will be partially open next Monday, with one lane in each direction.

It should have all lanes open by June 21.
