Mt Pleasant is all about the hipster and counter culture kinda lifestyle. Dollarama is cheap mass produced stuff from China. Literally the antithesis of that Mt Pleasant proports to be.

What's really crazy is their 150+ m stats.

Burnaby has 23 150+ m buildings either UC/proposed or complete. Calgary has a very respectable 24, and Vancouver has a measly 15

What's even more impressive is that Burnaby had exactly one 150m building just 5 years ago. One. In 10 years they will have essentially built over 20 skyscrapers.

And those numbers aren't counting any of the dozens of skyscrapers in the Brentwood, Lougheed and Southgate masterplans, so a bunch more in the pipe.

Its nothing compared to the boom in Toronto, but for a little suburb of 250k the boom going on in little ol' Burnaby is wild.

The density is great, but the public realm is horrible. There is no opportunity for a Commercial Drive or Mt. Pleasant style neighbourhood to develop there. Kerrisdale is more vibrant than Metrotown. Sorry to be a bummer.

I assume you've never been to the Heights? It's a great neighbourhood with a lot of character, and thankfully Burnaby is not tearing it down for skyscrapers.

Metrotown, Brentwood and Lougheed are a work in progress, but they are very much going in the right direction as strip malls and mall parking fields are replaced by mixed use communities and at grade retail.

Are Burnaby's neighbourhoods as good as some of Vancouver's older more established ones? No of course not, but that doesn't mean that building dense and tall is a bad idea.

It’s a long debate about these tower neighbourhoods. But yes Burnaby Heights is a proper neighbourhood. Along with Hastings Sunrise. These are places that will evolve into Mt. Pleasant level neighbourhoods.

I lived in Metrotown for two years between 2008 and 2010 (back when the twin Metropolis office towers were still king of the area) and while it defines wasn’t an urban paradise, even then it was just fine for day to day living (a good variety of restaurants, my bank, the gym, nice parks for jogging and Skytrain) all within walking distance.

that's possibly one of the "cleanest" Hamilton skyline shots I have ever seen.. Looks new and beautiful from that vantage point. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see how much it'll change in the next few years.

That's a really neat view....definitely a different take on the Hamilton skyline! I enjoy it....it's such a different way of looking at it, even with familiar and well, new buildings side by side.

Beautiful images of Montreal too...goodness.

I have to agree with this. Burnaby Heights is fine, and is kind of an extension of Hastings Sunrise. Burnaby's tower neighbourhoods are vertical suburbia. It is better than sprawl, and there are convenient amenities, but it just doesn't feel urban yet. It looks urban from a distance but doesn't feel that way. They may age well as neighbourhoods, once they get more layered and the then-older retail spaces draw in better and more varied tenants. As of now, it's swapping Earls in a parking lot for Earls in a tower podium, with wide roads and a weak street grid.

^ Great pictures... that first one in particular puts you in the thick of the downtown skyline with some up close views of buildings that are less prominent in skyline shots. Love it.
