well i am sure you'll be the first to pay more in taxes to pay the billions of dollars it'll cost to separate all the city sewers, right? right now, its planned to be done by 2050, because the amount of money it requires needs to be spread out over time. also, most of the homes do not drain into the water ways because the large majority of combined sewers drain into a MetroVancouver/GVS&DD sewer main.

the fact is, the illegal squatters do contribute to the water quality issues in False Creek, and removing them would remove part of the problem and would go a long way to helping.

so why don't you donate a few billion dollars to solve the problem? sounds like you really want to!
I doubt they use enough water or have enough feces to compete with any of the combined sewer overflows into False Creek. It's more likely Chinatown/DTES storm sewers dump into Burrard Inlet.

There are 3 CSOs that still exit into False Creek, but you're right; none of them service Chinatown. All of the Downtown sewers have been separated. There's a map on p13 here that shows where they are, one is at the end of the Creek by Science World, one is on Granville Island, and one is on the south side half way between those two. There's also a Metro Vancouver combined outflow on the south side. There are a number of storm sewers that flow into the Creek, and they can discharge coliform material that they pick up into the Creek - whether human, canine, goose or any other source.

The total cost to complete separation of sewage and rainwater pipes for the City was estimated last year at $3.7bn.

And none of this really has any relationship to the new St Paul's Hospital...

All water quality problems would have been solved if they never filled in False Creek in the first place. It was a ecologically rich site blanketed with thick eelgrass, plentiful clam beds, and natural underwater springs that were all filled in.

Since I'm not sure when I'll be able to write it up, I thought I should tease that St Paul's didn't have a good time at the UDP today, and not just because the meeting lasted for over four hours. That said, I can confirm that it will have a helipad and that the flight path for these emergency trips will come in from the west.

Makes sense that the choppers can fly in and out on top of the waterway at False Creek: similar flight path as those flying to Jim Pattison's at VGH. This will free up the airspace of the flats and Strathcona for future high-rise developments (when people can finally accept the fact that this is the way to go).

They can scoop it up like what other healthy cities do, or clean up the streets from lawlessness, or place more public toilets, with strict enforcements, my dear friend. This City should keep up with the times.

If I donate the few billion dollars to the system, they WILL still flush everything down the drain, and use my money to buy more heritage hotels to turn them into slums, and at the same time giving out free drugs. So why should I? Please get a grip.

Problem: Vin is a broken record, endlessly repeating the same tired opinions and passing them off as if he has real expertise, which he clearly does not.

Solution: everyone ignore Vin's broken record and stupid opinions. That will remove plenty of bullshit from local waters. No, seriously.

Somehow, I doubt there'll be anything tall enough to block the helipad for at least forty years.

Can't know everything if you aren't an expert in helicopter flight paths...

Lots of activity going on site now, exciting to see. Jacob Bros. appears to be assisting PCL in the site work

The images aren't loading for some reason.

Jacob Bros' LinkedIn says they are doing some infrastructure work

Quote:
Currently at work delivering the new St. Paul’s Hospital Excavation and Utilities project, Rajesh says, “one of the most challenging aspects of this project is the complexity of the offsite utilities work within existing roadways.” ⠀

The scope of work includes installation of over 8,750m of watermain, sanitary and storm pipework, and BC Hydro conduit bank in the heart of Vancouver, BC.⠀

I can't even begin to fathom the amount of enabling work and utilities work required for a hospital of this size.

Here's the latest pic from their LinkedIn acct:

Probably not; if there is groundwater it ought to be a lot further down. It's more likely to be what collected after the intense storm at the beginning of the week.

there are 3 pile drivers on site and a bunch of piles.

I thought this project was NOT using pile driving?

Who said that?

Quote:
Neil MacConnell, the project lead for the new St. Paul’s, said when the tech park was contemplated, Schroeder Properties did a geotechnical analysis. He said:

“They had proposed three levels of parking below grade and did significant testing to confirm bearing capacities and identifying the capabilities. (They learned that) piling would be required in some areas.”
Quote:
John Clague, a Simon Fraser University professor who’s one of Canada’s leading experts in geological earth sciences and natural hazards, said experts will no doubt address the challenges at the site.

“It is possible to built a hospital on this site so as to prevent damage in the event of earthquake-induced liquefaction. For large structures, this is generally done by seating vertical columns that support the structure below the depth to which liquefaction is possible.”

As it was raised on another post, here's a link to a 1916 image that shows the site. (I don't have a cloud image storage these days, and it's too big to post here). The Ivanhoe is on the left - recently built as The VanDecar Hotel).

The site where the hospital will be built is where the clean fill can be seen in the middle of the picture. There had been a shallow inlet of False Creek before that. A year later the Union Station was built on the site, two years before the Canadian Northern Station was built alongside to the south. (That's still there today).

The history of development here, and the underlying ground conditions presumably explain why they apparently don't need to pile the new hospital construction.
