Even at 389 feet, that's still roughly the same height as the Frost tower so it will definitely make an impact for sure.
I think it'll be taller than both 389 and 393 feet. The 400 foot height in the thread title and that has been quoted in some articles is just an estimate, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a hair taller than 400 feet. I believe the 389 and 393 foot heights are to the main roof, and the mechanical roof will likely be somewhat taller than that. Typically, mechanical roof heights aren't included and are even exempt from height variances.

I still am hoping we get to see the elevations for this. I've been looking for them in the HDRC files, but so far I haven't seen any. If we don't see any then we'd have to wait until we can actually measure it with Google Earth, but I'm pretty sure it'll be at least closer to 400 feet.

That is a fantastic photo.

I've parked on many occasions in that lot across from the entry to the Embassy Suites. Each time I wondered why on earth they had those two giant parking lots in the heart of downtown. Let's hope that one gets filled soon as well.

That would be the Milam building which, fun fact, was the first highrise in the US to have air conditioning.

Construction to start this month

According to a today's San Antonio Express News business article, the city OKs $7M incentive deal for Weston's apartment high rise. The article states that the firm will start construction this month, and construction is expected to be completed by December 2023.

I saw that today as well and that is great news. I was a little shocked at the start of construction that they mentioned. I thought they still had to go before the HDRC to get final design approval. The Business Journal mentioned back in December when they received first design approval, that "The development group will need to return to the commission for final approval before obtaining a building permit."

https://www.bizjournals.com/sanantonio/n...d-32-story-apartment-tower-approval.html

I have been watching every HDRC meeting since then. I don't remember them in a meeting to get final approval. Did I miss something? I wouldn't be surprised it I had.

If I am not wrong then I hope that means that they are going to go before the commission at the May 19th meeting. Considering how connected Weston is, I am sure that he has done a lot of prelim work with the group and the meeting to get final approval would be more of a rubber stamp affair.

Does anyone know for sure if they already received final approval?

They can start construction and submit the design for approval at a later date because they have the massing approval already. The Canopy had approval and then a year or so ago they changed the design and sent it to the HDRC again.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking that might be the case. I am really anxious to see the final design. I can't wait for this building to start going vertical.

The Heron just posted an updated story about the tower getting subsidy approval.

Also had a few renderings that I hadn't seen before. Worth the read if you have a minute.

I'm so excited for SA to get this tower! It feels like things downtown are starting to kick into gear here.

I'd say things have been in gear...not sure we will ever see a boom like Austin for a myriad of reasons but there is a nice amount of construction happening in the core at the moment.

It's completely different dynamic up there. And, I hope that comment does not spur another city-v-city debate.

As my dear ole mom has said - a million times: "Worry about yourself and not what everyone else is doing."

San Antonio has some really great infill under construction. Other projects are in the pipeline. Each one is going to make S.A. look and feel more urban and cosmopolitan. I'm excited.

Good response, couldn't agree more.

Completely agree. I really love the Austin to SA corridor.

SA - NB - SM - AUS are four great towns and all have the hill country at their back door. Hard to find a more appealing region in Texas.

Happy for the good news. Unfortunately we are at least 30 years behind downtown progress schedule!

Not an opinion but a fact. I remember when Central Library first opened they had a massive model of what downtown and Broadway Avenue would look like by the mid 90's. Back then the plan to develop Broadway was already a decade behind schedule but they had massings of dozens of planned residential highrises and office towers that had stalled out. The reason for this was because County leaders far too often sabotaged denser projects proposed for the inner city and offered them incentives to instead build massive suburban campuses and lined their own pockets with impressive kick-backs. They allowed the inner city to stagnate and even decay while the suburbs sprawled out further. Since I was a child I saw the same buildings boarded up and vacant on Houston Street for decades until I moved to the West Coast. I moved back a few years ago and only a little before then did life start trickling back to downtown. No other major city has downtowns with stores vacant for 60 years... it just doesn't make sense. So that model in the library didn't even began to come into the embryonic stage of fruition until maybe 5 years ago... we are several decades if not more than half a century late, but it's better late than never.

Downtown San Antonio has the most retail of any city in Texas. There is a large thriving mall with a Macy's and until recent a Dillards in operation. There are some vacant store fronts on Houston street but most of the downtown area is thriving with commerce more so than the other Texas cities.
