Interesting. They opened a big store-within-a-store in HBC downtown Calgary about 2 years ago and it's been a huge success, sales exceeded expectations.

Good to see. Since the Halifax store is opening near their Ikea I would expect a Winnipeg store to be in the Ikea/Outlet mall area as well.

Does that store within a store have a dedicated cash register and sales staff like Topshop/Topman? How is the L.L. Bean's department's size compare to Topshop/Topman?

I would expect LL Bean will open in the Shindico/CF controlled properties around Polo Park, if not the mall proper. They must be starting to get desperate on those vacancy rates and are likely to get lease concessions to an only in market draw like LL Bean. It is the type of place that can generate extra traffic through the property and allow rents at smaller retailers to be kept up.

Was LL Bean not in Winnipeg before? I vaguely recall them or a similar chain type store being in the north west corner of Eaton Place before it became City Place.

That was Eddie Bauer, I think it was the first one in the city when it opened sometime in the early/mid 90s. It coincided with the big Eaton Place renovation around that time, which was pretty well the last time that EP made a real stab at attracting shopping mall retailers beyond what you might find in a typical suburban strip mall.

Your are right Eddie Bauer. CIBC moved in there when the annex part of City Place closed down.

Been working in City Place since Oct 1980 and too many places have come and gone over the years to remember them all.

I can't remember the exact system but I think it was using HBC's POS but still had dedicated staff. The store is quite large, I'd say double the size of the Topshop at Polo, ish. Definitely more of an actual store than just a standard branded area of a department store.

Lucky Brand Jeans coming to Polo Park.

"Two new stores will also be opening over the next month at Polo Park in Winnipeg and CF Shops at Don Mills in Toronto."

Wasn't there one at Polo Park before? I have some vague memory of buying Lucky Jeans dirt cheap at Nordstrom Rack in Minnesota 10+ years ago and then seeing them for like 3x the price at Polo Park.

Yes, it was on the second level by Sears. Lucky temporarily closed in Canada only to have Canadian operations bought by another company. Now they are opening new storefronts. Good for me as most of my jeans are Lucky Brand.

Pretty sure it was where Levi’s currently is. Which I’m pretty sure exited and returned to mall as well

Lucky Brand Jeans went bankrupt and was bought as a going concern by a couple US mall landlords. They have been doing that with better known brands so they can fill their properties with stores instead of having dead spaces. As they are effectively not paying rent it makes their operating costs a fair bit lower than a true tenant.

Giant Tiger is planning to open up about 40 or so more stores. The North & East KIldonan area could benefit from another store in the area, but on Henderson Hwy. Munroe & London is a little bit tricky to get to if you don't live near it.

Not really that tricky. You just go there like you would any other store. I suppose the bus routes that go there dont really go up to Henderson.

Henderson is way under served in every capacity from Disraeli to Kimberly, at least.

Apparently all on hold until the bulk of the pandemic is over. Not likely until 2022.

^ Interesting. If anything this seems like boom times for big boxes like Costco... you figure they'd be in high gear to get going.

I think Costco is just part of a larger development. Likely the developers who are on hold.
