Corporations buying up housing stock and corporate run apartments are part of the problem, as are wages which is what my post was about.
Corporate bought housing stock is quite literally a drop in the bucket. Even $60B worth is a fraction of a percent of total housing stock.
And a corporation buying a house really isn't any worse than some individual flipper that has watched too many episodes on HGTV. They're actually more likely to be efficient and cost effective about it.

^I'd suggest reading the article for more depth, but ok.

Sadly, there are only FIVE early polling locations East of I35, this is a real bad look and I am surprised no local news sources have picked up on it.

Do y'all think that developers would ever demolish the 4th St gay bars to make way for other buildings? I truly hope not as they are vitally important for the LGBT culture in Austin. I just notice a lot of development happening all around them and they are in a highly desirable location DT being situated between the two planned downtown light rail stations. I figured that developers probably have their eyes on that area.

I’m sure they will eventually. Might be nice to protect that last warehouse district block (4th between Lavaca & Colorado). If the city allowed air rights to be sold, that could save them.

I really hope developers think twice before destroying a piece of the city with culture and history. That block is the center of LGBT life in this city, and I can’t imagine that would go away without a fight.

Agreed, as this city doesn't have a traditional "gayborhood" like other large metros, 4th street is where everyone gathers from whatever corner of the city they live.

Would it reconstitute somewhere else eventually? I mean . . . isn't the gayborhood really more about the party people rather than just the buildings where they meet?

EDIT: and I'm not suggesting 4th should be paved over or anything, but feel like the strength of the bar scene isn't ever really in the bars themselves.

If that stretch of 4th was redeveloped, the likely outcome would likely be a few singular gay venues popping up in random quarters of the city. The community would become further dispersed throughout the city. It's nice that that people are comfortable being their gay ol' selves in any part of the city, but it's also important for many gay people to have a place to go where they aren't always the minority. I don't go to 4th street anymore, but I'd certainly be opposed to killing it off.

Possibly, but buildings with decades of queer history would be destroyed. I am fully on board with tearing down 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 buildings so that we can continue to density, but not at the expense of community and culture. Our pride parade literally goes down that street every year. It has a lot of meaning, and I don’t think it can be truly recreated somewhere relate.

Can a moderator fix up the development links thread? It’s outdated and only some of the links work. Such as AULCC and some of the webcams don’t work. thanks guys.

The webcams are all OK as of five minutes ago. Once in a while they go down. The Hyatt Centric was down for a few days, but it came back up tonight.

I changed the AULCC link to go to 2021. It was pointing to the archive of previous years.

I deleted three links that were either dead or changed to require a sign in.

I also have an updated projects list that I'll be uploading in the near future.

Interesting! There is a new building proposed for Vancouver that looks a little like the winning entry, although it is not actually living. I remember back when I was in high school about 40 years ago and growing my interest in architecture, I predicted to my mom that in the future we would grow buildings by genetically modifying trees. She just look at me and muttered "interesting" and then searched my pockets for the weed she knew I was smoking.

nashville is likely the heavy favorite. austin is a more and more legit contender by the day though. local govt should absolutely do some due diligence here

That's assuming said local government has a head on its shoulders.

This is simply the Oakland A's threatening the City of Oakland to get a stadium built. I actually really like their Howard Terminal plan.

Nashville is definitely a competitor. However, my worry is their market may be over saturated with professional teams already. Remember, its smaller than Austin and has less disposable income in which to spread across all their professional franchises. There is a higher risk of failure in cities like that.

Vegas and Charlotte would probably be the leaders. Vancouver might be next. Portland is interesting and Montreal already lost one MLB franchise.

A boy can dream:

Team: Austin Athletics
Owners: Michael Dell & Nolan Ryan
President: Reid Ryan
Colors: White/Green/Yellow
Stadium: Waterfront (Statesman Site)

The stadium site would be integrated into the southshore plan, still surrounded by high rises, the boardwalk and Blue Line station. That stadium could also attract concerts and potentially a college football bowl game.

I know this is a long shot and those other cities are on the list ahead of us, but all it takes is the ownership group seeing the potential and falling in love with Austin. Precourt did and now we have an MLS team. Again, a boy can dream.

No matter what city they go to, they need to do something about that name. The Athletics? You mean they aren't couch potatoes posing as a baseball team?
