Today's departure count: 7

Tomorrow was supposed to be the day Flair was going to launch YOW ops. Is that still happening or is it delayed?

I believe they pushed it to beginning of June with a reduced schedule. Their full schedule is available as of mid July. (ex: YYC is 2x weekly to start in June, then ramps up to 4x weekly in July).

The pandemic era has produced some oddities on the daily YOW FIDS.

Saturday's departure count is 8. How's this for strange:
-All flights are to YYZ and YUL only;
-There's an equal number of YYZ and YUL departures;
-Excluding those rare days where weather shuts down an airport, AC has more flights scheduled to YUL (4), than YYZ (3)...except the former is all Express and the latter is all mainline; and
-The last YYZ departure is at 1610, while the final 3 YUL departures all come after the last YYZ departure at 1620, 1715 and 1745.

Bizarre eh!

Today’s departure count of 10 is the highest since sometime in January.

Now’s probably a good time to bite the nails considering YOW-LHR has been pulled for summer ‘22 and YUL remains at double daily with it.

Curious to see if anyone else will seize it.

I still think it's early to say that it won't return. If this was fall 2021 and they released the S22 schedule and it wasn't there, I would be very worried.

It could be very dependent on business travel as well. I don't doubt that economy could be filled easily next summer to LHR. People will want to travel if the pandemic is under control and restrictions are lifted. Double daily to YUL is really weird though. I am hoping its a place holder. Time will tell!

I have noticed that YOW-YYJ will be 2x weekly starting July 2. I believe it was originally announced as just 1x weekly?

You can tell that AC thinks a majority of the travelers on this route will be of YOW origin.

The YOW-YYJ will be on Fri/Sat, whereas the YYJ-YOW will be Sat/Sun.
Both on the 223.

I hear you, which is why I went with biting the nails as opposed to full on panic. The other part is that it’s still too early to do any late spring/summer overseas booking anyway.

The fall schedule update will be very telling.

I posted this in the Canada airport thread so I’ll just quote it here.

YOW-LHR was AC888 pre-COVID but was supposed to change to AC868 I believe. Seems that number change has been abandoned (?) because AC868 is taken and AC888 is unassigned. If we’re to believe the map YOW-LHR might return under its familiar number (?).

YOW-FRA is even more interesting. AC flew it as AC838 for years then handed it off to LH pre-COVID (but it never got a chance to fly due to it). If we’re to believe the map then maybe AC is planning to take this back under the familiar AC838 (?)

It's sad to think that our airport could be without any transatlantic air service post-pandemic...while AC keep YHZ-LHR. The new, smaller AC are not surprisingly putting all their eggs more than ever in the hub basket...yet are suddenly obsessed with YOW-YYJ, a market they've yet to ever fly a flight on. It's unfortunate that AC think there's more money flying 2x daily YUL-LHR as opposed to keeping YOW-LHR on a MAX until traffic recovers enough to upgauge it back to a 788 or 333.

I'm still hopeful that LH will load YOW-FRA for May 2022...still too soon to know.

Today's departure count: 7

Yesterday's was also 7, while Monday was 8.

Looks like Sunday in reality (according to flightaware) ended up being 9.

Also of note today:
-PAL had charters to YAM on a DH3 and YYZ on a BEH today.
-Looks like the FAB ICAO call sign is now retired for First Air/Canadian North and it's replaced with AKT.

I think it's because any traffic and demand this summer is going to be intra-Canada. I also believe that some people will be more willing to travel if it is a direct, non-stop flight, thus eliminating a transfer point at another airport where they raise their chances of contracting covid-19.

I have no doubt that if AC has the aircrafts next summer that YOW-YYJ will still be around.

Is it cynical that this is just an attempt to muscle Flair off the route?

Flair is surprisingly not flying this route. They are planning to fly to YVR, YXX and YLW.

WestJet actually announced YOW-YYJ first... albeit 1x weekly, but I do think AC announced the route because of WestJet.

We forget that YHZ is a hub for the entire maritimes. If AC made everyone there backtrack to YUL or YYZ, everyone would be jumping on the WestJet flights to LGW.

Weird, I just assumed that Flair had plans for the route. But the Westjet explanation makes sense.

Flair are actually going to do YKF-YYJ.

All the airlines seem to think Ontarians and Quebecers are going to flock to BC this summer. We'll see if it happens.

Kind of doubting that for the first part of this summer at least.

I believe YKF offers some pretty serious incentives as they struggle to keep regular service. Maybe that will change, but being from that area, Pearson is too close and has much better options. YYJ seems like a niche service, so I have my doubts that is the magic bullet.
